6th and 16th Judicial District appointments announced
Colorado Governor Jared Polis has appointed Sean P. Murray as the District Attorney for the 6th Judicial District. This appointment fills a vacancy created by the resignation of District Attorney Christian Champagne and is effective March 16, 2024.
Murray is an Assistant District Attorney for the 6th Judicial District, a position he has held since 2022. Previously, he was an Appellate Deputy District Attorney in the 6th Judicial District (2020-2022); Deputy District Attorney in the 6th Judicial District (2017-2020), Assistant District Attorney in the 22nd Judicial District (2014-2016); Deputy District Attorney in the 22nd Judicial District (2013-2014); and Public Defender with the Colorado State Public Defender in the Durango Office (2011-2013).
He earned his B.A. and J.D. from the University of Virginia in 2007 and 2011, respectively.
Colorado’s 6th Judicial District includes Archuleta, La Plata, and San Juan counties.
Governor Polis has also appointed William J. Culver to the Otero County Court in the 16th Judicial District. The vacancy is created by the retirement of the Honorable Douglas R. Manley and is effective May 1, 2024.
Upon joining the Otero County bench Mr. Culver will vacate his elected position as the District Attorney for the 16th Judicial District. To fill this vacancy, the Governor will gather a panel of former District Attorneys who will provide him with recommendations to fill the vacancy.
Culver is the District Attorney in the 16th Judicial District, a position he has held since 2021. His practice consists of criminal prosecution. Previously, he was an Assistant District Attorney in the 16th Judicial District (2012-2021); Solo Practitioner (2003-2012); and Associate Attorney with the Law Office of J.E. Losavio (1996-2003).
Culver earned his B.A. from Fort Hays State University in 1992 and his J.D. from Emory University School of Law in 1995.
Colorado’s 16th Judicial District includes Bent, Crowley, and Otero counties.
