“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, but to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
Each month this school year the third graders and their teacher, Mrs. Gifford, come to visit us. We do anticipate the day when these well-mannered children come to do crafts or entertain us. Charlene Gifford and our Activity Director, Brenda Leon, are amazing organizers for these monthly visits.
Hospital Week was another outstanding, fun, and heartwarming week for everyone. Each day the staff was encouraged to wear costumes. One of the best days was Cinco de Mayo. There were Mexican band members, dancers, and warriors. Prettiest of all was Marla Darnell dressed as a dancer in a bright silky tiered skirt, white lacy blouse, and dancing shoes. Wig day and movie day were entertaining. One day we had an amazing 16-year-old singer dressed in a yellow skirt and top with satin flounce sing to us. Makayla Marez is from Lamar and is a junior in Goal Academy. We see her mother, Anna, here as a hospice nurse for some of our residents. We were impressed with what a fine singer she was. Even though we couldn’t understand her Spanish words, she was an outstanding performer.
The Future Farmers of America banquet and auction was Tuesday night. It was well attended. One student was purchased for $600 or more. Wow! Justin Lenox works long hours and many weekends with these students and out at the FFA farm.
Plainview High School in Kiowa County has two graduates this year. Alexis Schneider is the senior and the eighth grader is Jaxon Specht. The Sheridan Lake Bible Church celebrated them last week with a wonderful lunch and program.
When Donnie Spady was admitted to Weisbrod Hospital last week on his birthday, we saw several of his relatives who came from Haswell, Lamar, Las Animas, and Eads to celebrate his birthday with cake and ice cream.
Carol Shalberg of Sheridan Lake returned recently from an interesting bus tour through the Eastern states and Nashville, Tennessee area. She is a frequent visitor of Edith Koeller here at Weisbrod.
When the Eads Chamber of Commerce met last week they gave the recipients certificates and best wishes. The Chamber officers will go to other graduations on the 23rd, so they presented them with certificates and I will present the scholarships at graduation to Kara Wilson, Lexi Shotton, and Tailee Weeks-Johnson.
Terry and Areta Laird took a cruise along the eastern coast and stopped off at Boston, Philadelphia, and other historical cities and sites of the Civil War and American Revolution.
That was such an answer to prayer. We were blessed with a slow rain in eastern Colorado on May 4 and 10 that was an answer to our prayers. In fact, my nephews can’t do their spring planting yet in the Prairie Queen area.
When I returned from church Sunday in Kit Carson, a nurse told me that Gene Wieser had stopped by. I think he went on to greet Betty Crow. I remember that he was such a good athlete. I looked in that wonderful Alumni Book and read that he graduated in 1954. Betty said he lives in Lakewood.
When Virglyn and I returned from the senior citizen breakfast at the Eads Senior Citizen Center Wednesday, we heard this wonderful piano music. I thought it was a recording, but when I went to the large dining room, there was that wonderful Burl Scherler from Sheridan Lake. When we complimented him he said, “Aww shucks, I didn’t have any books, that was from memory.” We told him that he was welcome to play for us any time.
Terry and Susie Gibbs from Arkansas visited Lucy Barnett last week. They have been here to visit relatives in Colorado and especially around Kit Carson and Haswell where his son, Casey, lives.
The Eads Elementary School concert Thursday evening brought a huge audience of families and friends to enjoy the singing show directed by Monica Uhland. We were so pleased to have front row seats and our “pushers” sat elsewhere or returned to Weisbrod. Mrs. Uhland had arranged that the front row was reserved for our thirteen wheelchairs. Two of her aunts, Vera Fell Hammons and Donna Fell Eaton, were among those in wheelchairs. The children wore the same color tee shirt as their classmates. This helped us to recognize our young relative or friend. Superintendent Glenn Smith opened the door for us and Principal Trey Eder welcomed the audience. The first performance was by the two sections of kindergarten. The lively little singers were directed by their teachers, Tina Kraft and Brooke Lenox.
Tammy Crow came to see her mother, Betty, last weekend. Tammy retired in January after working in the banking profession for 47 years. Since then, she has been on a cruise around Spain, and golfed in South Carolina and Arizona different weeks. I am proud of Tammy’s accomplishments since I tutored her in high school.
May 10 was not only Mother’s Day but also a golf tournament in Eads for the adults.
The second week in May many student athletes in track will be traveling to the State Meet. Eads’ senior Tailee Weeks-Johnson is top ranked in field sports.
The Eads Golf Team will be competing in the Colorado State Playoffs May 18–19 near Denver at the Lone Tree Golf Course.
Free kids fishing at Jackson’s Pond May 17 at 1:00–4:00 p.m.
