Ag stats: August 2022 U.S. and mountain states grain stocks highlights

ARIZONA

Off-farm all wheat stocks in Arizona on September 1, 2022 were 4.04 million bushels, down 28 percent from September 1, 2021, according to the September 1 Agricultural Survey and September Grain Stocks Report conducted by the Mountain Regional Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service, USDA. Other Arizona grain stocks were not published separately to avoid disclosing data for individual operations.

COLORADO

Corn stocks in Colorado on September 1, 2022 were 10.76 million bushels, up 11 percent from September 1, 2021, according to the September 1 Agricultural Survey and September Grain Stocks Report conducted by the Mountain Regional Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service, USDA. Corn stocks stored on farms amounted to 3.10 million bushels, compared to 3.60 million bushels a year ago. Corn stored off farms amounted to 7.66 million bushels, up 26 percent from a year ago. Sorghum stored off-farm were 756,000 bushels, up 89 percent from last year. Oats stored off-farm were 20,000 bushels, down 62 percent from last year. Off-farm barley stocks totaled 3.61 million bushels, down 8 percent from last year.

All wheat stocks in Colorado on September 1, 2022 were 42.52 million bushels, down 33 percent from September 1, 2021. All wheat stocks stored on farms amounted to 12.00 million bushels, down 47 percent from a year ago. All wheat stored off farms amounted to

30.52 million bushels, down 26 percent from a year ago. Other Colorado grain stocks were not published separately to avoid disclosing data for individual operations.

MONTANA

Oat stocks in Montana on September 1, 2022 were 826,000 bushels, up 5 percent from September 1, 2021, according to the September 1 Agricultural Survey and September Grain Stocks Report conducted by the Mountain Regional Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service, USDA. Off-farm oat stocks were 76,000 bushels, up 111 percent from a year ago and on-farm oat stocks were 750,000 bushels, unchanged from a year ago. Montana barley stocks in all positions on September 1, 2022 were 40.55 million bushels, up 29 percent from a year ago. Barley stored on farms totaled 33.50 million bushels, up 52 percent from last year. Off-farm barley stocks were down 26 percent from a year ago to 7.05 million bushels.

All wheat stocks in Montana on September 1, 2022 were 127.35 million bushels, up 21 percent from September 1, 2021. All wheat stocks stored on farms amounted to 94.00 million bushels, up 32 percent from a year ago. All wheat stored off farms amounted to 33.35 million bushels, down 3 percent from a year ago. Durum wheat stocks on September 1, 2022 were 15.03 million bushels, up 49 percent from a year ago. Durum wheat stocks stored on farms amounted to 12.50 million bushels, up 60 percent from a year ago and Durum wheat stored off farms amounted to 2.53 million bushels, up 9 percent from a year ago. Other Montana grain stocks were not published separately to avoid disclosing data for individual operations.

NEW MEXICO

New Mexico grain stocks on September 1, 2022 were not published separately to avoid disclosing data for individual operations.

UTAH

Off-farm all wheat stocks in Utah on September 1, 2022 were 2.92 million bushels, down 47 percent from September 1, 2021, according to the September 1 Agricultural Survey and September Grain Stocks Report conducted by the Mountain Regional Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service, USDA. Other Utah grain stocks were not published separately to avoid disclosing data for individual operations.

WYOMING

Wyoming grain stocks on September 1, 2022 were not published separately to avoid disclosing data for individual operations.

UNITED STATES

Old crop corn stocks in all positions on September 1, 2022 totaled 1.38 billion bushels, up 12 percent from September 1, 2021. Of the total stocks, 510 million bushels are stored on farms, up 29 percent from a year earlier. Off-farm stocks, at 867 million bushels, are up 3 percent from a year ago. The June - August 2022 indicated disappearance is 2.97 billion bushels, compared with 2.88 billion bushels during the same period last year.

Based on an analysis of end-of-marketing year stock estimates, disappearance data for exports, and farm program administrative data, the 2021 corn for grain production is revised down 41.4 million bushels from the previous estimate. Corn silage production is revised down 888 thousand tons. Planted area is revised to 93.3 million acres, and area harvested for grain is revised to 85.3 million acres. Area harvested for silage is revised to 6.45 million acres. The 2021 grain yield, at 176.7 bushels per acre, is down 0.3 bushel from the previous estimate. The 2021 silage yield, at 20.1 tons per acre, remains unchanged from the previous estimate.

Old crop grain sorghum stored in all positions on September 1, 2022 totaled 53.2 million bushels, up 162 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks, at 2.46 million bushels, are up 318 percent from last year. Off-farm stocks, at 50.8 million bushels, are up 157 percent from September 1, 2021. The June - August 2022 indicated disappearance from all positions is 67.7 million bushels, up 228 percent from the same period a year ago.

Oats stored in all positions on September 1, 2022 totaled 62.6 million bushels, 1 percent above the stocks on September 1, 2021. Of the total stocks on hand, 41.7 million bushels are stored on farms, 30 percent higher than a year ago. Off-farm stocks totaled 20.9 million bushels, 30 percent below the previous year. Indicated disappearance during June - August 2022 totaled 25.9 million bushels, compared with 15.8 million bushels during the same period a year ago.

Barley stocks in all positions on September 1, 2022 totaled 165 million bushels, up 22 percent from September 1, 2021. On-farm stocks are estimated at 121 million bushels, 56 percent above a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 44.3 million bushels, are 23 percent below September 2021. The June - August 2022 indicated disappearance is 51.1 million bushels, 9 percent below the same period a year earlier.

All wheat stored in all positions on September 1, 2022 totaled 1.78 billion bushels, up less than 1 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks are estimated at 591 million bushels, up 41 percent from last September. Off-farm stocks, at 1.18 billion bushels, are down 13 percent from a year ago. The June - August 2022 indicated disappearance is 543 million bushels, down 24 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Durum wheat stocks in all positions on September 1, 2022 totaled 53.9 million bushels, up 17 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks, at 31.5 million bushels, are up 50 percent from September 1, 2021. Off-farm stocks totaled 22.4 million bushels, down 10 percent from a year ago. The June - August 2022 indicated disappearance of 33.3 million bushels is up 76 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Old crop soybeans stored in all positions on September 1, 2022 totaled 274 million bushels, up 7 percent from September 1, 2021. Soybean stocks stored on farms totaled 62.9 million bushels, down 8 percent from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 211 million bushels, are up 12 percent from last September. Indicated disappearance for June - August 2022 totaled 698 million bushels, up 36 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Based on an analysis of end-of-marketing year stock estimates, disappearance data for exports and crushings, and farm program administrative data, the 2021 soybean production is revised up 30.2 million bushels from the previous estimate. Planted area is unchanged at 87.2 million acres, but harvested area is revised to 86.3 million acres. The 2021 yield, at 51.7 bushels per acre, is up 0.3 bushel from the previous estimate.

Old crop sunflower stocks in all positions on September 1, 2022 totaled 295 million pounds, down 25 percent from a year ago. All stocks stored on farms totaled 45.5 million pounds and off-farm stocks totaled 249 million pounds. Stocks of oil type sunflower seed are 223 million pounds; of this total, 41.4 million pounds are on-farm stocks and 182 million pounds are off-farm stocks. Non-oil sunflower stocks totaled 71.7 million pounds, with 4.10 million pounds stored on the farm and 67.6 million pounds stored off the farm.
