Ag stats: Kansas crop progress and condition report – week ending October 9, 2022

For the week ending October 9, 2022, there were 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 52 percent very short, 29 percent short, 18 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 55 percent very short, 31 percent short, 14 percent adequate, and 0 percent surplus. 

Field Crops Report: Winter wheat planted was 50 percent, behind 60 percent last year, and near 54 percent for the five-year average. Emerged was 19 percent, behind 29 percent last year and 31 percent average. 

Corn mature was 95 percent, near 97 percent last year and 93 percent average. Harvested was 61 percent, near 64 percent last year, but ahead of 54 percent average. 

Soybean condition rated 22 percent very poor, 24 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 23 percent good, and 2 percent excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 82 percent, equal to both last year and average. Harvested was 30 percent, ahead of 25 percent last year and 21 percent average. 

Sorghum condition rated 22 percent very poor, 32 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 20 percent good, and 1 percent excellent. Sorghum coloring was 96 percent, near 99 percent last year and 98 percent average. Mature was 70 percent, behind 79 percent last year, and near 72 percent average. Harvested was 25 percent, behind 30 percent last year, but ahead of 19 percent average. 

Cotton condition rated 12 percent very poor, 46 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 15 percent good, and 2 percent excellent. Cotton bolls opening was 81 percent, equal to last year, and ahead of 73 percent average. Harvested was 16 percent, ahead of 2 percent both last year and average. 

Sunflowers harvested was 14 percent, behind 25 percent last year, and equal to average. 

Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 46 percent very poor, 28 percent poor, 18 percent fair, 8 percent good, and 0 percent excellent.
