The week of January 29 through February 5, especially Wednesday-Saturday, was extremely busy for the Hawks.

Wednesday, January 31, the junior high Hawks basketball team took on Alta Vista, losing in a close game.

Thursday, February 1, was the Plainview Science Fair. There hasn’t been a science fair at Plainview for a number of years. There were five individual projects and three team projects. Students selected their own projects and carried out their research at school and at home. The projects included Jocelyn Anderson (junior), whose category was Biomedical and Health Science, project titled “YOWZER! Brain and Sound;” Destiny Cornelius (junior), whose category was Microbiology, project titled “Slobbers and Saliva;” Elijah Harkness (senior), whose category was Chemistry, project titled “Burning Plants Clean Pans;” Ky Harkness (junior), whose category was Environmental Engineering, project titled “ Shakin’ and Quakin’;” Alexis Schneider (sophomore) and Hailey Cornelius (freshman), whose category was Behavioral and Social Sciences, project titled “The Scent of Memory: Investigating the Relationship Between Oils’ Smell and Memory Retention;” Annah Harkness (eighth), whose category was Chemistry, project titled “Electrolytes: The Secret Weapon of Athletes;” Alexa (eighth) and Gael Enriquez Munoz (sixth) who project was Robotics and Intelligent Machines, project titled “ VEX Robotics: Overcoming Obstacles;” and Kate Enriquez (eighth) and Jaxson Specht (sixth), whose category was Physics and Astronomy, project titled “Black Holes—Menace of the Universe.”

Placing in the high school were the following: first—Elijah Harkness, second—Destiny Cornelius, third—Ky Harkness, fourth—Alexis Schneider and Hailey Cornelius, and fifth—Jocelyn Anderson. Those moving on to the regional science fair are Elijah, Destiny, and Ky. Winning Best of Show (People’s Choice) was Alexis Schneider and Hailey Cornelius.

Judges for the Plainview Science Fair were Debbie Shivers, Tearle Lessenden, and Jonathan Hitt.

During the science fair—and for a little fun—Erin Schneider allowed the elementary students and anyone else who wanted to—to shoot silly string at her.

Following the science fair was the Junior/Senior Soup Supper. Everyone enjoyed their choice of soup: taco, potato, or vegetable.

February 2, the Plainview Junior High Knowledge team competed in the Vilas Knowledge Meet. The Hawks placed first, with a total of 56 points, scoring 31 out of 40 on the written round. Great Job! Their next meet is at Campo on February 9.

Also on February 2, the high school and junior high went on a field trip to Denver. The high school toured Metro State College; both the high school and junior high ate at iPie, a pizza restaurant and finished the evening by attending a Nuggets game. The next day, Saturday, February 3, the high school indoor track team competed in a meet at the Air Force Academy. As one can see, the junior high and high had a fantastic time!

The elementary students had enrichment Friday on February 2, where they worked on spaghetti and marshmallow towers, watched a magic for human video, performed skits, and played charades.

February 5, the Plainview High School Knowledge team competed in the regional state qualifying meet at Eads High School; unfortunately, the Hawks (Eli, Ky, Destiny, Alexis, and Hailey) didn’t qualify for the state meet.
