The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is leading a homicide investigation in Trinidad after a man was fatally shot in the 600 block of South Indiana Avenue in the early morning hours of July 31, 2026.

Law enforcement responded at approximately 12:19 a.m. to a report of a physical altercation involving three individuals. Officers located Dominic Garcia (date of birth: March 2, 1997), who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Medical personnel attempted life-saving measures, but Garcia was pronounced deceased at the scene at approximately 1:35 a.m.

Atilano Diaz, 21, has been taken into custody in connection with the incident. He faces charges of second-degree murder (C.R.S. 18-3-103) and prohibited use of a weapon (C.R.S. 18-12-106).

The Trinidad Police Department is assisting CBI in the investigation. No further information is available for release at this time to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

Charges are merely accusations; all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
