A stretch of sunny, warm weather is in store for Cheyenne Wells and the rest of Cheyenne County this week, with afternoon highs in the mid-80s through Wednesday and climbing close to 90 by Thursday under a persistent upper-level ridge.

Monday is expected to be sunny with a high near 85 and an overnight low around 49, according to the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., which covers Cheyenne County and the rest of the Tri-State region.

Forecasters in the Goodland office indicate that the area will remain on the northern edge of an upper ridge anchored over the southern Rockies through midweek, keeping skies mostly clear and rain chances near zero.

No fire weather highlights in effect

Cheyenne County is not under any active fire weather watch or red flag warning for the Monday-through-Wednesday period. The Goodland office's latest fire weather product shows no current highlights. While afternoon humidities will run low across far eastern Colorado, sustained winds across Cheyenne County remain generally below the thresholds typically associated with critical fire weather criteria.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday brings sunny skies and a slightly cooler high near 82 as a weak northerly flow drifts through the area. Overnight lows fall to around 46 with mostly clear skies.

Wednesday returns to sunshine with a high near 85 and a partly cloudy night with a low around 52. Winds remain manageable for the work week, with no gust thresholds expected to approach advisory criteria across Cheyenne County.

Extended outlook: Thursday and Friday

The latter half of the week trends warmer. Thursday is forecast mostly sunny with a high near 88, followed by a partly cloudy night with a low near 51. Friday holds the warmth with a high near 86 under mostly sunny skies.

The Climate Prediction Center's 6- to 10-day outlook favors above-normal temperatures across Colorado, with near-normal precipitation chances. The 8- to 14-day outlook continues the above-normal temperature signal while leaning toward below-normal precipitation across the state, suggesting Cheyenne County is likely to remain in a warm, dry pattern through the end of the month.

With grasses still cured from winter and fuels drying further under warm afternoon sun, area residents are reminded to use caution with any outdoor burning, equipment that can throw sparks, or discarded cigarettes, even on days without a formal fire weather highlight.
