Cheyenne Wells heat peaks at 101 Tuesday with storm chances nearly every day this week
Cheyenne County starts the week hot, with Cheyenne Wells expected to reach near 99 degrees Monday and 101 Tuesday before a slow-building pattern change brings thunderstorm chances nearly every day and a sharp cooldown by Thursday.
Monday will turn from partly sunny to sunny and hot, with a high near 99, west winds of 5 to 10 mph becoming east in the afternoon, and a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4 p.m. Storm chances rise to 30 percent Monday night before midnight, with skies gradually clearing and a low around 64.
“Hot conditions look to continue under this setup, with highs currently forecast in the upper 90s to mid 100s,” a meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion.
Dry heat Tuesday, then moisture returns
No fire weather warnings are in effect for Cheyenne County, but Tuesday bears watching: forecasters in Goodland expect afternoon relative humidity to fall as low as the upper teens across eastern Colorado. Weak winds should keep conditions below critical fire weather thresholds — the office put confidence in a Red Flag Warning at less than 5 percent — though any evening storms Tuesday could carry the risk of dry lightning, a potential source of fire starts.
By Wednesday and Thursday, easterly surface flow is expected to draw moisture back into the region, cooling temperatures and making thunderstorm activity more probable. The risk of severe weather is low, though forecasters noted Wednesday's lingering heat could promote microburst winds of 60 to 70 mph with any storms that develop.

Tuesday will be the hottest day of the week — sunny with a high near 101 and light west winds becoming east in the afternoon. Tuesday night stays quiet and partly cloudy with a low around 65.
Wednesday remains hot at near 98 under mostly sunny skies, with a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. The chance of storms climbs to 40 percent Wednesday night before midnight, with a low around 61.
Extended outlook: Thursday and Friday
Thursday marks the turn: mostly sunny with a high near 84 — some 15 degrees cooler than Wednesday — and a 20 percent chance of afternoon storms. Showers arrive Thursday night with an 80 percent chance of precipitation and a low around 57. Friday looks partly sunny with a high near 81 and a 20 percent chance of afternoon storms, followed by likely showers and thunderstorms Friday night.
Goodland forecasters expect the cooler, wetter pattern to hold into the weekend, with the highest rain chances — 60 to 75 percent for at least a tenth of an inch — focused over eastern Colorado and highs in the 70s and 80s.
Ahead of Thursday's relief, residents should take the usual heat precautions Monday through Wednesday: stay hydrated, limit midday exertion, and keep an eye on animals and vulnerable neighbors.
