Cheyenne County will enjoy a sunny, warming stretch through Thursday before a strong cold front swings across the central High Plains on Friday, dropping temperatures, bringing breezy winds and a chance of light snow by Friday night. Goodland forecasters say a hard freeze is possible Friday night into Saturday morning.

Wednesday brings sunny skies to Cheyenne Wells with a high near 69 and northwest winds around 10 mph. Overnight lows will settle near 37 under mostly clear skies. No advisories are in effect for Cheyenne County on Wednesday.

"A strong cold front looks to begin traversing the forecast region sometime Friday afternoon, though there are some issues as to the exact timing," meteorologists with the Goodland, Kan., forecast office wrote in Wednesday's Area Forecast Discussion. "This matters because critical fire weather conditions may be experienced ahead of the cold front."

Thursday warmup and elevated fire weather

Thursday will be the warmest day of the week in Cheyenne Wells, with sunny skies and a high near 79 as a modest upper-level ridge builds over the Central Plains. Southwest winds of 5 to 20 mph, gusting to 30 mph, will mix dry air down to the surface. Forecasters in Goodland describe the setup as "breezy" and "marginally critical" for fire weather across portions of eastern Colorado and far western Kansas.

Friday's front, a possible hard freeze

A high-amplitude upper-level trough will sweep across the Rockies beginning Friday morning, and a surface low is expected to deepen across the central High Plains. Before the front arrives, winds could gust 25 to 40 mph with relative humidity in the mid to upper teens, elevating fire danger. Mostly sunny skies give way to a chance of rain showers in the afternoon. Temperatures drop quickly behind the front, with a chance of rain and snow showers Friday night and lows near 23. Goodland forecasters say measurable snow is possible across northeastern Colorado, though accumulations near Cheyenne Wells are expected to be light.

Weekend: cold start, warmer Sunday

Saturday opens cold, with a slight chance of lingering snow showers before noon, then sunshine and a high near 57. Winds stay out of the northwest. Saturday night will be mostly clear and cold, with lows near 27. Sunday rebounds to a high near 73 under full sunshine and southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph. Forecasters note that elevated fire weather conditions may return Sunday as winds pick up on the back side of a departing system.

Producers with calving cows, recently planted crops or exposed water lines should prepare for freezing temperatures Friday night and Saturday night, and for wind-driven drying on Thursday.
