Cheyenne Wells and Cheyenne County begin the week under sunny skies with highs in the mid-90s, climbing near 98 on Tuesday before thunderstorm chances return Tuesday through Thursday. The National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan., says a summer blocking pattern will keep the region warm and mostly dry early on, with isolated storms possible each afternoon.

Monday is sunny, with a high near 95 and a south wind of 5 to 15 mph. Monday night is partly cloudy with a low around 63 and a southeast wind near 15 mph gusting to 30 mph.

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion that an "increasing signal for a prolonged period of hot and dry conditions" is expected starting next weekend, following the midweek storm chances.

Gusty winds, dry lightning a fire concern

Forecasters say relative humidity should stay above critical fire-weather levels, dropping only briefly into the upper teens in eastern Colorado each afternoon. Even so, winds turn gustier each day, with gusts around 30 to 35 mph possible Tuesday afternoon, and dry lightning remains a concern with early-week storms. No Red Flag Warning is in effect for Cheyenne County. A stronger round of storms is possible Tuesday night as a cold front sweeps through, potentially bringing damaging wind gusts and small hail.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday is sunny and hot, with a high near 98 and a breezy south wind of 15 to 20 mph gusting to 30 mph. A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms arrives Tuesday night. Wednesday stays sunny with a high near 96, and the chance of evening storms climbs to 50 percent Wednesday night as the low drops to around 60.

Extended outlook: Thursday and Friday

Showers are likely Thursday with a high near 90, and a 50 percent chance of storms continues Thursday night. Friday turns cooler and mostly sunny with a high near 88. Beyond the week, forecasters point to a large area of high pressure building over the western United States that could bring a prolonged stretch of hot to very hot weather, with the potential for triple-digit temperatures and dwindling rain chances.

Residents should watch for gusty winds and the chance of dry lightning with early-week storms and stay alert for a stronger line of storms Tuesday night.
