The Colorado State Patrol has released motorcycle violation statistics for 2025 and the first eight months of 2026, warning riders that careless driving and speeding remain the leading causes of citations as the riding season winds down.

The top motorcycle charges issued by Colorado State Troopers for 2025 were speeding (215), careless driving (201), no motorcycle endorsement (186), failed to provide proof of insurance (92), and reckless driving (53). Within the speeding category, 10-19 mph over the limit accounted for 98 citations, 20-24 mph over for 62, and 25-39 mph over for 55.

From January 2026 through September 1, 2026, careless driving led with 164 citations, followed closely by speeding (162), no motorcycle endorsement (155), failed to provide proof of insurance (47), and reckless driving (37). Speeding subcategories included 10-19 mph over (73), 20-24 mph over (55), and 25-39 mph over (34).

Troopers note that while careless driving claimed the top spot so far in 2026, the top five charges remain the same as the prior year. 2026 has also seen the deadliest opening quarter for Colorado motorcyclists in nearly a decade.

The Colorado State Patrol says it will continue strict enforcement for motorcyclists to lower the overall fatal number across the state. Troopers remind riders that increased experience does not justify unsafe lane changes, speeding, or riding distracted, and that without the physical protection of an enclosed vehicle, riders face a much higher risk of severe injury or death in any crash. All riders are required to hold a Motorcycle Endorsement from their first day on the road.
