CPW recovers child drowning victim from Cherry Creek Reservoir
Colorado Parks and Wildlife recovered a child drowning victim from the Cherry Creek Reservoir swim beach area Saturday evening, June 6, 2026, after a multiagency water rescue response at Cherry Creek State Park in Aurora.
Witnesses told CPW that two children were on a float near the swim beach around 4:00 p.m. One child left the float in shallow water and walked to shore; the other continued into deeper water. At 4:25 p.m., witnesses saw the child go under. A CPW seasonal park ranger and park visitors entered the reservoir in an immediate rescue attempt.
South Metro Fire Rescue's dive team, which was conducting water rescue training elsewhere in the park, responded within minutes. The West Metro Fire dive team and Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office also assisted. CPW's Marine Evidence Recovery Team recovered the victim at 10:20 p.m.
Neither child on the float was wearing a life jacket.
