A fire weather watch has been issued for Kiowa County for Thursday afternoon through Thursday evening as the National Weather Service in Pueblo forecasts southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph and relative humidity values as low as 11 percent — conditions that would allow any fires to catch and spread rapidly and erratically.

Wednesday will bring a chance of rain showers, mainly after noon, along with cloudy skies and a high near 69 degrees. Southeast winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph during the day. Overnight, a chance of showers lingers before midnight as skies gradually clear. A low around 35 degrees is expected, with westerly winds of 10 to 20 mph.

Meteorologists in the Pueblo forecast office, in their Tuesday afternoon Area Forecast Discussion, noted “critical fire weather conditions returning Thursday across southeast plains.” A second system arriving Friday was expected to bring “more wind than precipitation.”

Wednesday through Thursday

Wednesday’s shower chances — about 40 percent after midday — will give way to sunny skies by Thursday morning. Temperatures will rebound sharply, with a high near 79 degrees, as winds shift from the northwest in the morning to south-southwest in the afternoon. The National Weather Service has placed Kiowa County under a Fire Weather Watch for Thursday afternoon through evening, citing southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph, gusts to 40 mph, and humidity potentially dropping to 11 percent.

Friday and Saturday

A cold front is expected to push through Thursday night, ushering in north winds of 20 to 30 mph and a high near 63 degrees on Friday. Mostly sunny skies prevail, but wind will remain a factor throughout the day. Saturday stays sunny and breezy, with a high near 64 degrees and north-northwest winds of 20 to 25 mph. Overnight lows will dip to the upper 20s both nights.

Extended outlook

Sunday offers a quieter close to the stretch, with sunny skies, a high near 72 degrees, and lighter south-southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph. The extended outlook suggests a return to more active weather patterns early in the week ahead.

Residents and agricultural producers in Kiowa County should plan for hazardous fire weather conditions Thursday afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service cautions that fires developing under watch conditions will catch and spread rapidly and behave erratically. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.
