A cold front pushing through eastern Colorado on Monday will bring chances for showers and thunderstorms, gusty north winds and a freezing low overnight to Cheyenne County, the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan., said. The pattern stays unsettled through Wednesday and Thursday before drier weather returns by week's end.

Monday in Cheyenne Wells is forecast to be mostly cloudy with a chance of showers before 3 p.m. and a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 3 and 5 p.m. The high is expected near 65. Northeast winds of 10 to 20 mph will increase to 20 to 30 mph in the afternoon, with gusts up to 40 mph. Rainfall chances are 40%.

Forecasters in the Goodland office noted that the most consequential element of the period will be Monday night's temperature drop. The low is forecast near 31, with north winds of 20 to 30 mph easing to 10 to 20 mph after midnight, gusts to 40 mph. A freeze watch covers Cheyenne County, and growers and gardeners should plan accordingly.

Cold and breezy through midweek

Tuesday turns sunny but cool, with a high near 62 and north winds of 5 to 15 mph shifting to easterly in the afternoon. Tuesday night brings a 30% chance of showers after midnight under mostly cloudy skies, with a low near 37. Wednesday will be mostly cloudy with a 50% chance of showers and afternoon thunderstorms, and the high struggles to reach 60. Wednesday night carries a 70% chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible.

Tuesday and Wednesday outlook

Tuesday delivers sunshine and a quieter wind, providing an opportunity for outdoor work between the weekend's warmth and midweek's unsettled spell. The Goodland forecast office indicates a shortwave trough is expected to round the base of a broader Western U.S. trough Tuesday night and Wednesday, lifting moisture across the High Plains and triggering shower and thunderstorm activity.

Cheyenne County could see beneficial rainfall mid- to late-week, particularly Wednesday night and Thursday, though forecast confidence in totals remains moderate. Storms will be high-based and may produce gusty outflow winds, but severe weather is not currently expected.

Extended outlook: Thursday and Friday

Thursday will be mostly cloudy with a slight chance of morning showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. The high is forecast near 67 with a 40% rain chance. Thursday night brings a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight, easing to a slight chance of showers after midnight, with a low near 41.

Friday turns mostly sunny with just a 20% chance of showers or thunderstorms and a high near 73. Climate Prediction Center extended outlooks favor near- to slightly above-normal temperatures across the eastern Colorado plains heading into next weekend, with near-normal precipitation. By Saturday, drier and warmer conditions are expected to take hold, with highs climbing into the upper 70s and low 80s.
