Heat advisory: Lamar to reach 106 Monday before midweek cooldown in Prowers County
A heat advisory is in effect for Lamar and the Prowers County area from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday as temperatures soar to a high near 106 under sunny skies. Relief arrives Monday night, when a strong cool front drops Tuesday's high into the upper 80s and brings thunderstorm chances to the area through midweek.
Monday will be sunny, hot, and breezy, with an east-southeast wind of 10 to 20 mph becoming south in the morning. Monday night carries a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 11 p.m., with a low around 64. Winds shift to the north at 20 to 25 mph after midnight behind the front, with gusts as high as 35 mph.
“HOT. Records will likely be tied or broken today at the 3 primary sites,” Stephen Hodanish, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo, wrote in Monday's Area Forecast Discussion, noting Pueblo is forecast to reach 105 against a record of 103. Hodanish said the cool front will cross the region Monday evening and push into New Mexico during the overnight hours, with winds turning gusty behind it.
Dangerous heat Monday, then a sharp cooldown
Monday's high near 106 makes for the hottest day of the week and dangerous conditions for anyone outdoors during the afternoon. The heat advisory runs from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Forecasters said winds should stay relatively light during the day, keeping critical fire weather conditions at bay, though the combination of heat and dry vegetation still warrants caution. By Tuesday, highs fall nearly 20 degrees, with the Pueblo office noting the plains may not climb above 90 anywhere in the region.

Tuesday will be mostly sunny and breezy with a high near 88. North winds of 20 to 25 mph early become east-northeast at 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Tuesday night brings a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight, with a low around 61.
Wednesday will be sunny and breezy with a high near 91, as east-northeast winds increase to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon with gusts to 30 mph. Wednesday night carries a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a low around 59.
Extended outlook: Thursday and Friday
Heat rebuilds to close the week. Thursday will be sunny with a high near 95 and southeast winds of 5 to 15 mph, with a 20 percent chance of evening thunderstorms Thursday night and a low around 62. Friday continues sunny with a high near 98.
The weekend looks hotter still, with highs near 101 Saturday and 104 Sunday. Climate Prediction Center outlooks issued Sunday favor above-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation for Colorado through mid-August, and Pueblo forecasters said guidance hints at the monsoon returning early next week.
During Monday's heat advisory, residents should drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon, and never leave children or pets in vehicles.
