Lamar and Prowers County face a hot, dry and breezy week, with sunny skies and highs near 94 Monday, 93 Tuesday and 94 Wednesday — and hotter days to follow — according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.

Monday will be sunny with a high near 94 as south-southeast winds of 10 to 15 mph strengthen to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon, gusting to 30 mph. Monday night turns clear with a low around 63, with southeast winds easing to 10 to 15 mph after midnight but gusting as high as 35 mph early.

"Modest easterly flow aloft supports warm and dry conditions across much of eastern Colorado through the upcoming work week," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion.

Heat climbs toward the upper 90s

The warming trend is the week's main story. After midweek highs in the low to mid 90s, Lamar reaches near 95 Thursday and 98 Friday, with Saturday expected to be sunny and hot with a high near 100. Gusty southeast winds of 30 to 35 mph accompany the heat most days.

No fire weather watches or warnings were in effect for Prowers County as of Sunday night, and the Pueblo office listed no active watches, warnings or advisories. Still, the combination of building heat, dry skies and daily wind gusts past 30 mph warrants continued caution with anything that could throw a spark, and forecasters noted breezy easterly flow could keep spotty critical fire conditions in place at times across the region.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday will be sunny with a high near 93 and a breezy southeast wind of 10 to 20 mph gusting to 30 mph. Tuesday night turns clear with a low around 61 as winds ease to 5 to 10 mph after midnight.

Wednesday brings more sunshine and a high near 94, with southeast winds of 5 to 10 mph climbing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon and gusting to 30 mph. Wednesday night will be clear with a low around 62 and southeast winds around 15 mph.

Extended outlook

The heat peaks late in the week. Thursday will be sunny with a high near 95 and south-southeast winds of 15 to 25 mph gusting to 35 mph, and Friday climbs to a sunny 98 with similar winds. Overnight lows edge into the mid 60s by Friday night.

Beyond the workweek, Climate Prediction Center outlooks issued Sunday favor above-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation for Colorado July 18-22, as monsoonal moisture spreads north from the Desert Southwest. Pueblo forecasters said that moisture could work into the region over the weekend into early next week.

With highs pushing the upper 90s and winds gusting to 35 mph, residents should limit strenuous outdoor work to morning hours late in the week, drink plenty of water and avoid any outdoor burning.
