Labor Day heat near 97 in Kiowa County before storms and a midweek cooldown
Eads faces a hot, breezy Labor Day with a high near 97 and an afternoon chance of thunderstorms, the start of a week the National Weather Service says will turn steadily cooler and wetter through Wednesday.
The Weather Service in Pueblo calls for mostly sunny skies Monday with a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4 p.m. South winds of 15 to 25 mph will gust as high as 35 mph. Skies turn mostly cloudy Monday evening before clearing, with a low around 65 and gusts to 40 mph possible overnight.
"Isolated to scattered showers and storms are expected to blossom along the higher terrain by mid afternoon, and slowly drift east across the valleys and eastern plains through late afternoon," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion. "The main hazards with any of the stronger storms will be gusty outflow winds to around 50 mph and frequent lightning."
Wind and storm outflow the main concern
No watches, warnings or advisories were in effect for Kiowa County as of late Sunday, and the Pueblo office listed no fire weather headlines. Forecasters said lee troughing will tighten the pressure gradient across the eastern plains, producing the sustained winds of 15 to 20 mph and gusts of 20 to 35 mph expected through Monday. Storms that develop over the mountains and drift east can produce erratic outflow winds well ahead of any rain.

Tuesday and Wednesday
Tuesday turns sunny with a high near 93 and lighter winds, shifting from north-northwest to east-northeast during the afternoon. The best rain chance of the week arrives Tuesday night, when the Weather Service puts the chance of showers and thunderstorms at 50 percent under partly cloudy skies and a low around 62. Rainfall amounts are expected to stay under a tenth of an inch outside of thunderstorms.
A cold front drops Wednesday's high to near 86 — close to the seasonal average for early September — with sunny skies giving way to a 20 percent chance of storms after noon. North winds of 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon will gust to 30 mph. Another 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms follows Wednesday night, with a low near 59.
Extended outlook
Temperatures rebound heading into the weekend. Thursday is forecast sunny with a high near 87 and a low around 59, followed by a sunny Friday near 92. Pueblo forecasters cautioned that confidence drops later in the week as an upper-level ridge flattens and troughing approaches, with signals pointing to another dip in temperatures by the weekend.
Motorists and anyone working outdoors Monday should watch for sudden wind shifts near developing storms, which can arrive well before the rain.
