Lamar in for hot, sunny week; gusty Wednesday raises fire-weather caution
Lamar and the rest of Prowers County are headed into the warmest stretch of spring so far, with daytime highs forecast to reach the upper 90s by the weekend and breezy conditions returning Sunday. The National Weather Service in Pueblo is calling for mostly sunny, dry weather through the five-day period that begins today.
Lamar will see sunny skies Wednesday with a high near 89 degrees. A south-southeast wind of 5 to 15 mph is expected to strengthen to 15 to 25 mph in the afternoon, with gusts as high as 40 mph. Wednesday night turns mostly cloudy before clearing late, and the low will settle near 55. Wind remains breezy overnight, easing after midnight.
Forecasters with the Pueblo office of the National Weather Service note that a strengthening ridge of high pressure over the central United States is responsible for the buildup of heat across the southeast plains. The pattern is expected to peak Saturday and Sunday before a cold front delivers cooler air on Monday.
Thursday could top 95
Thursday is forecast to be the hottest day of the work week in Lamar, with a high near 96 degrees. The morning starts mostly cloudy before sunshine takes over by midday. A west wind of 10 to 15 mph will help offset the heat slightly. Thursday night drops to a low near 49 under mostly clear skies.
Friday returns to full sun with a high near 91. A north-northwest wind of 5 to 15 mph shifts to the east during the afternoon. Friday night stays partly cloudy with a low around 49.

Weekend heat and Sunday wind
The weekend in Prowers County is set to be the warmest of the period. Saturday should reach 97 degrees in Lamar under sunny skies, with a light south-southwest wind turning to southeast in the afternoon. Saturday night stays partly cloudy with a low near 48.
Sunday once again is forecast to reach 97, but conditions turn breezy as south-southwest winds pick up to 20 to 25 mph in the afternoon, with gusts to 40 mph. The combination of high temperatures, low humidity and strong winds will create elevated fire conditions across Prowers County and the rest of the southeast plains. While Prowers County (Zone 236) is not currently in a fire weather watch or red flag warning, residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and to use caution with anything that could spark a grass fire.
Looking ahead
A cold front is expected to move through the area Sunday night, bringing a sharp cooldown to start next week. Monday highs in Lamar are forecast to be only about 79 degrees, with breezy west winds 20 to 25 mph. Tuesday cools further into the upper 70s under sunny skies.
