Lamar nears 97 degrees Sunday before rain and cooler air reach Prowers County
Lamar is in for a hot, dry weekend, with Friday reaching near 93 degrees and Sunday topping out around 97 alongside gusty south winds. A cold front Monday night brings the best rain chance of the period to Prowers County and knocks Tuesday's high down to about 74.
Friday is sunny in Lamar with a high near 93. An east-southeast wind of 5 to 10 mph shifts to the west-southwest in the afternoon as dry air mixes down across the plains. Friday night stays mostly clear with a low around 61 and an east wind near 5 mph turning west after midnight.
"Temperatures ebb and flow through early next week with a slow increase in precipitation chances," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Friday's Area Forecast Discussion. The office said plains highs would run some 5 to 10 degrees above seasonal norms Friday, mainly in the 90s, with very dry air in place across much of the region.
Heat and wind raise fire concerns Sunday and Monday
No red flag warnings or fire weather watches were in effect for Prowers County or zone 236 on Friday morning, and the Pueblo office listed no watches, warnings or advisories anywhere in its forecast area. Even so, the combination of near-record warmth, dry fuels and gusty winds Sunday and Monday will keep fire conditions elevated across the Lamar area.
Sunday's high near 97 comes with a south wind of 5 to 10 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon and gusts to 30 mph, and the wind stays up overnight at 20 to 25 mph. Monday is nearly as warm at about 93 with a breezy southwest wind of 15 to 25 mph. Forecasters in Pueblo noted spotty critical fire weather conditions over and near the higher terrain to the west Friday, though not widespread enough for formal headlines.
