Prowers County will climb into the mid 80s on Thursday before a cold front drives temperatures back into the 60s and delivers gusty winds, a slight chance of rain and snow showers, and a freezing weekend start. The National Weather Service in Pueblo has placed Prowers County, including Lamar, under a Fire Weather Watch from Thursday morning through Thursday evening.

Wednesday brings sunny skies to Lamar with a high near 73 and light west-northwest winds around 5 to 10 mph. Overnight lows will dip to about 36 under mostly clear skies. No highlights are in effect for Wednesday, though forecasters note spotty elevated fire concerns across the southeast plains during the afternoon.

"Upper ridge migrates eastward into the High Plains, with increasing southwesterly mid/upper flow across Colorado as next upper trough digs into the northern Great Basin," Eric Petersen, a meteorologist with the Pueblo forecast office, wrote in Wednesday's Area Forecast Discussion. He added that Thursday's humidity is expected to "drop off to below 10 percent in spots by afternoon as deep mixing develops."

Fire weather watch in effect for Prowers County

The Fire Weather Watch covering fire weather zone 236, which includes Lamar and Prowers County, is scheduled to begin Thursday morning and expire Thursday evening. Forecasters are calling for southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph and relative humidity as low as 7 percent. Fires that start are likely to spread rapidly and erratically. Open burning is strongly discouraged, and residents should avoid dragging chains, parking vehicles in tall grass and other ignition risks.

Thursday's heat, Friday's wind and cold

Thursday will be the warmest day in Lamar, with full sunshine and a high near 85. Southwest winds of 5 to 15 mph will keep the air dry. A strong cold front is expected to push across southeastern Colorado Friday afternoon, with the exact timing still uncertain. Forecasters in Pueblo say deep westerly flow ahead of the front could briefly push fire weather into critical territory Friday morning, especially south of the Arkansas River.

Friday highs will only reach near 74 as the front approaches, with west winds of 15 to 30 mph gusting to 45 mph. Rain and snow showers are possible Friday night behind the front, though forecasters say precipitation coverage will drop off sharply south of the Arkansas River, and many areas near Lamar may see little or no rain or snow. Lows Friday night fall to about 24.

Weekend outlook: cold start, quick rebound

Saturday will be sunny but cool, with a high near 63 and northwest winds of 10 to 20 mph. Saturday night will be mostly clear with lows near 27, marking the second consecutive freezing morning for Prowers County. Sunday warms quickly to near 79 under sunshine and south-southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph, setting up a return to well-above-average temperatures early next week.

Drivers on U.S. 50 and U.S. 287 should be prepared for blowing dust, reduced visibility and sudden temperature drops Friday afternoon and evening. Residents with outdoor pipes, young plants or livestock should plan for a hard freeze Friday night into Saturday morning.
