Hot, sunny weather returns to Cheyenne County on Friday with a high near 98, but National Weather Service forecasters in Goodland, Kan., warn that severe thunderstorms are possible Friday and Saturday afternoons and evenings, carrying the threat of damaging wind, blowing dust and large hail.

Friday will be sunny and hot around Cheyenne Wells with a high near 98 and southwest winds of 5 to 10 mph becoming northwest by mid-morning. Skies stay mostly clear Friday night with a low around 61 as winds turn to the northeast after midnight.

“Severe storms are again possible Friday and Saturday afternoons and evenings,” a meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Friday’s Area Forecast Discussion, listing localized wind gusts up to 75 mph, blowing dust and hail up to 2 inches as the primary threats.

Severe storm threat

Forecasters said isolated to scattered storms could develop Friday afternoon along surface boundaries, with an unstable atmosphere capable of producing large hail and damaging winds. A second round is possible Saturday as another disturbance moves out of Colorado, though confidence in how far east storms hold together remains low. The primary hazards both days are localized wind gusts up to 75 mph, blowing dust and hail up to 2 inches in diameter. The weather service listed no fire weather warnings for Colorado.
