A strong storm system is expected to bring rain, gusty winds and possible thunderstorms to Lamar and the rest of Prowers County beginning Tuesday, ending a brief warm stretch and dropping temperatures into the 40s before sunshine and 70s return Thursday and Friday.

Lamar is forecast to climb near 85 degrees Monday under mostly sunny skies, with west winds around 10 mph and just a 20 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms after 4 p.m. A cold front is expected to push south across the plains during the evening, sending winds out of the north-northwest at 10 to 15 mph and turning them to the northeast late. Overnight lows are forecast around 42 degrees with a slight chance of showers.

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Pueblo wrote in Monday’s Area Forecast Discussion that forecasters anticipate “widespread moderate to heavy precipitation, including snow down to 5–6 kft” as the system moves across Colorado Tuesday and Wednesday.

Storm system arrives Tuesday

Tuesday is expected to be Lamar’s wettest and breeziest day of the week. Showers are forecast to overspread the area in the morning, with showers likely and a possible thunderstorm by mid-afternoon. The high is forecast at about 55 degrees, with breezy east winds of 15 to 20 mph and a 70 percent chance of precipitation. Showers and possibly a thunderstorm are expected Tuesday night, with a low near 31 degrees and rainfall amounts of a quarter to a half inch possible.

Wednesday continues the wet and chilly pattern. Forecasters expect rain to mix with snow showers in the morning before transitioning to all rain after 3 p.m., with thunder still possible. Lamar is forecast to top out near 42 degrees with northeast winds of 10 to 15 mph and a 90 percent chance of precipitation. Skies clear Wednesday night, but the low is expected to drop to about 27 degrees, raising freeze concerns for tender vegetation.

Fire weather: Caution recommended Monday

No Red Flag Warning was in effect for Prowers County as of Monday morning, but the Pueblo forecast office flagged the potential for spotty, critical fire weather conditions Monday afternoon across far southeastern Colorado, including Huerfano, Las Animas and Baca Counties. Forecasters did not extend a fire weather highlight to Prowers County, citing recent rainfall and marginal humidity values, but they recommended caution with any outdoor burning. With temperatures near 85 and gusty winds expected before the front arrives, residents are urged to delay agricultural burns and to be careful with sparks from equipment along dry roadside ditches.

Tuesday and Wednesday at a glance

The Tuesday-Wednesday window will deliver the most active weather of the period. Tuesday brings periods of rain, breezy east winds and a high in the mid-50s. Wednesday opens cold, with rain and snow showers possible in the morning, before gradually transitioning to all rain in the afternoon. Travel on U.S. 50 and U.S. 287 may be affected by reduced visibility, brief downpours and slick spots in the early morning hours.

Extended outlook: Quiet and warming Thursday and Friday

A rapid return to sunshine and seasonable warmth is on tap for the back half of the workweek. Lamar is forecast to be sunny Thursday with a high near 74 and west-southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph, followed by sunny skies and a high near 78 on Friday. Climate Prediction Center 6–10 day and 8–14 day outlooks favor above-normal temperatures across southeastern Colorado through the middle of May, with near-normal precipitation chances as a possible weekend system moves through the region.

Residents should plan for cold, wet conditions Tuesday and Wednesday, with the potential for slick roads, brief power-line stress under heavy rain and a hard freeze Wednesday night. Updates and warnings are available at weather.gov/pub.
