Cloudy skies and on-and-off showers move into Cheyenne County on Wednesday, followed by thunderstorms Wednesday night and a windy Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan. Clearing skies Thursday night set up the first frost chances of the fall.

Wednesday is cloudy with a high near 54 and a 50 percent chance of showers, before noon and again after 2 p.m. East winds blow at 10 to 15 mph.

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Goodland wrote in Tuesday's Area Forecast Discussion that the system should produce light, widespread showers because of a shallow moist layer and a lack of instability. Storm-total precipitation is expected to range from 0.30 inch to 0.75 inch, with the higher amounts north of Interstate 70.

Thunderstorms Wednesday night, strong winds Thursday

Wednesday night brings showers and thunderstorms before midnight, then a chance of showers between midnight and 2 a.m. The forecast puts the chance of precipitation at 100 percent. The low is near 42, with east winds of 10 to 15 mph turning north after midnight.

Thursday is mostly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of showers before noon and a high near 54. North winds of 15 to 20 mph increase to 25 to 30 mph in the morning, with gusts as high as 40 mph. The Goodland office said counties along and west of the Colorado-Kansas border could see gusts near 45 mph, and areas that receive little rain could see localized blowing dust.

Thursday and Friday

Thursday night is partly cloudy and windy with a low around 34. North winds of 25 to 30 mph decrease to 15 to 20 mph after midnight, with gusts to 40 mph. Winds calm around midnight, though breezy conditions with gusts near 20 mph are possible through Friday morning.

Friday is sunny with a high near 55. Friday night is mostly clear with a low around 31. The Goodland office said the threat of the season's first frost increases Friday and Saturday mornings, with about a 40 percent chance of temperatures below 32 degrees northwest of a line from Burlington, Colo., to Trenton, Neb.

Extended outlook

A warming trend takes hold over the weekend. Saturday is sunny with a high near 66, followed by a partly cloudy night with a low around 43. Sunday is mostly sunny with a high near 73 and a low of 43 Sunday night. Forecasters expect southwest winds of 10 to 25 mph Saturday, gusting to 35 mph, and winds of 5 to 15 mph Sunday.

No Red Flag Warning or other watches or warnings were in effect for Cheyenne County Tuesday afternoon. The Goodland office said critical fire weather is not expected to be a major concern, but relative humidity could dip into the teens Saturday and Sunday, and any fire weather concerns would center on eastern Colorado counties where stronger gusts line up with lower humidity.
