Storms Saturday night begin a steady cool-down for Eads and Kiowa County
A stretch of late-summer warmth ends this weekend in Kiowa County, as showers and thunderstorms move into the Eads area Saturday night and high temperatures slide from near 90 on Friday to the middle 70s by Sunday.
Friday brings mostly sunny skies and a high near 90 at Eads, with a south-southwest wind of 5 to 10 mph turning to the northwest during the morning. Skies become mostly cloudy Friday night, with a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight and a low around 59. The wind shifts to the north after midnight.
The National Weather Service forecast office in Pueblo, which issues forecasts for Kiowa County, puts the chance of precipitation at 80 percent both Saturday night and Sunday night, with rainfall of a tenth to a quarter of an inch expected each night and locally higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. No watches, warnings or advisories were in effect for Kiowa County as of Friday morning, and no fire weather headlines were posted for the area.
Two wet nights drive the temperature drop
The change comes in two waves, both of them after dark. The first arrives Saturday evening, when showers and a possible thunderstorm settle over the area behind a cold front, with an east wind of 10 to 15 mph turning north-northeast after midnight and a low near 56.
A second round follows Sunday night, when showers are likely and a thunderstorm is possible before the rain becomes steadier after midnight. The low Sunday night drops to around 52, the coolest reading of the five-day period.
The cumulative effect is an 18-degree drop in daytime highs between Friday and Tuesday. After Friday's 90, Eads is forecast to reach 84 Saturday, 76 Sunday, 73 Monday and 72 Tuesday — readings that run below normal for late September on the eastern plains.

Monday is mostly sunny with a high near 73 and a 20 percent chance of showers, with thunderstorms possible after noon. Showers become likely after midnight Monday night, when the chance of precipitation climbs to 60 percent and the low settles near 53.
Tuesday turns breezy and mostly cloudy with a high near 72, a southeast wind of 20 to 25 mph and a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Gusts to 35 mph are possible Tuesday night.
