Sunny skies and highs in the low 80s are forecast for Cheyenne Wells and Cheyenne County on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with dry conditions and winds that grow breezier toward the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan.

Wednesday is sunny with a high near 82 degrees, a bit cooler than Tuesday. A north wind around 5 mph will turn southeast in the afternoon. Wednesday night is clear with a low around 53.

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Tuesday’s Area Forecast Discussion that forecasters “may have to keep an eye out for critical fire weather conditions” as winds increase and drier air tries to push in from the west later in the week. The forecaster said Saturday could bring more concern if temperatures run warmer than forecast.

Fire weather to watch

No watches, warnings or advisories were in effect for the Goodland forecast area as of Tuesday afternoon, and no Red Flag Warning has been issued. Conditions Tuesday were warm and dry, with humidity near 17 percent at the Burlington observing station and a temperature of 87 degrees.

Forecasters said winds should strengthen Friday as low pressure deepens over the High Plains, with the potential for gusts to 35 mph in parts of the region.

Thursday and Friday

Thursday is sunny with a high near 81, and a south wind of 5 to 15 mph. Thursday night is clear with a low near 54.

Friday is sunny with a high near 82. Friday night is clear and breezy with a low around 55.

Extended outlook

Saturday is sunny with a high near 82, followed by a mostly clear, breezy night with a low around 56. Sunday is sunny with a high near 79 and a partly cloudy night with a low near 55.

Forecasters say a cold front is expected to bring cooler weather early next week, with a small chance of showers Monday night. The Goodland office noted considerable uncertainty about the timing of the next storm system, with a slower arrival potentially bringing more precipitation and much cooler temperatures.

Because dry vegetation and gusty wind can combine quickly, residents are urged to be careful with outdoor burning and equipment that can spark.
