A flood warning for the Arkansas River at Lamar was set to end at 5 a.m. Friday, the National Weather Service in Pueblo said. After that, Lamar and the rest of Prowers County can expect a dry, sunny weekend with highs in the 60s.

Friday is partly sunny, with a high near 59. The wind is west southwest at 5 to 10 mph, then turns east southeast in the afternoon. Friday night is cloudy at first, then becomes partly cloudy. The low is around 35.

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Friday’s written forecast discussion that "skies to slowly clear from west to east" overnight. The forecaster said dry, warm weather should last into the middle of next week.

Flood warning on the Arkansas River

As of 4:15 a.m. Friday, the only alert in effect for Prowers County was the flood warning, which was set to end at 5 a.m. Friday. The weather service had no fire weather watches or warnings in effect for Prowers County.

The weather service said emergency management reported flooding on the Arkansas River at Lamar. The warning began at 6 p.m. Thursday. At 5 p.m. Thursday the river stood at 8.9 feet. Forecasters expected it to crest at 9.6 feet late Thursday evening.

The weather service said the river is full to its banks at 10 feet. At that level, minor flooding of low ground near Lamar begins, and water flows into low meadows near County Road 13.

The weather service advised drivers not to drive around barricades or through flooded areas. It also urged caution when walking near riverbanks.
