Wanted fugitive arrested in La Junta following short vehicle pursuit
A wanted fugitive was taken into custody without incident Monday afternoon in La Junta after a short vehicle pursuit and standoff at a residence in the 400 block of Hayes Avenue.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the La Junta Police Department announced the arrest of Anthony Burquez, 38, at approximately 4:30 p.m. on April 7, 2026. Burquez was sought in connection with outstanding parole warrants.

La Junta police officers spotted Burquez and initiated a short vehicle pursuit. Burquez subsequently entered a residence, where assisting agencies established a perimeter. He surrendered to law enforcement shortly afterward. Investigators said Burquez appeared to have access to the house, and no other individuals were inside the residence at the time. He was not armed when taken into custody.
At the time of his arrest, Burquez had two outstanding felony warrants: one for possession of a weapon by a previous offender out of Otero County and one for a parole violation out of the Department of Corrections.
The operation was a coordinated effort involving the CBI, Colorado State Patrol, Rocky Ford Police Department, Otero County Sheriff’s Office and the La Junta Police Department.
