Winter advisory through Wednesday afternoon, then sun returns to Cheyenne Wells
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Cheyenne County through 3 p.m. Wednesday as a late-season storm drops a band of rain and snow across the eastern plains. After the system clears, Cheyenne Wells turns dry and seasonably mild Thursday and Friday, with weekend highs reaching the low 80s.
Wednesday brings rain and snow before 3 p.m., shifting to a chance of rain through the rest of the day, with patchy fog and patchy freezing fog limiting visibility through mid-morning. The high climbs only to about 39, with northeast winds 5 to 10 mph becoming light and variable in the afternoon. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches is possible, the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan., said.
Meteorologists in the Goodland forecast office wrote that the snow band is expected to track east-to-west across the area: "rain has been changing to snow in Colorado," with a "changeover to snow as far east as Highway 27 (one column into Kansas) by 12z, continuing in those areas through 15z, then a gradual change back to rain by 18z," according to Wednesday's Area Forecast Discussion.
Freeze Warning Wednesday night for Cheyenne County
A Freeze Warning takes effect at 9 p.m. Wednesday and runs through 8 a.m. Thursday for Cheyenne County (zone COZ092), with overnight lows in Cheyenne Wells expected to fall to around 23 degrees. Forecasters described it as a hard freeze along and west of Kansas Highway 27, with Cheyenne County squarely inside the warning area.
Westerly winds increase overnight as skies clear, but with a snowpack still in place upstream and lingering cloud cover, forecasters said radiational cooling will be only modest. Even so, gardeners and producers should plan to protect tender plants and water lines through Thursday morning.

Sun and a quick rebound Thursday and Friday
Thursday turns sunny across Cheyenne County after the storm exits, with a high near 69 and a steady west wind around 15 mph. Forecasters in Goodland said much of their warning area, including the western parts of Kit Carson and Cheyenne counties, will see highs in the mid-60s as drier air arrives behind the system. Overnight Thursday, partly cloudy skies hold lows near 39.
Friday stays sunny with a high near 71 and light winds. Forecasters said no frost or freeze is expected Friday or Saturday mornings, a welcome turn for late-planted crops and lawns.
Weekend outlook: warmer Saturday, breezier conditions
Saturday is the warmest day of the seven-day window in Cheyenne Wells, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 80. Northwest wind gusts in the 25- to 35-mph range are possible, the Goodland office said, as a shortwave disturbance approaches from the west. A 20 percent chance of showers arrives after midnight Saturday, with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 40.
Sunday cools slightly, with a 20 percent chance of showers before noon and an afternoon high near 69 under mostly sunny skies. Forecasters in Goodland noted the weekend system carries some severe-weather potential five days out, but with significant uncertainty about timing and track.
Drivers should expect slick roads and reduced visibility during the heaviest snow and freezing fog Wednesday morning. Tender plants and exposed plumbing should be protected through Thursday morning.
