About Town – February 12, 2024

Jesus said, “A new commandment I give to you: LOVE ONE ANOTHER. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13: 34 NIV

Happy Valentine’s Day and month to you, reader friends. This is an entertaining month with all the excitement about the Super Bowl (football) and the advertisements of good things we could buy to give to loved ones.

Some of us will share Valentine cards or flowers, candy, and gifts. Remember what fun it was in grade school to get Valentines from a beautifully decorated box? I loved it, and cherished those times. I remember those elegant 1920 to 1930s Valentines that my Mother, Ida, saved for years and years. Just today, Linda Trosper hung some similar cards in reds and pinks with little cupids from the shelf in our large dining room in the Weisbrod Extended Care Unit. They surround a lovely, hand-crafted fabric wall hanging of hearts. Jaton Wallace, Activity Director, has made pretty sacks by each of our doors that will hold Valentines for each of us. She has lots of thoughtful ideas to make our lives more interesting and fun. How about you, dear reader: have you taken time to write a note or bought a little card to give or send to a friend or someone dear to you? I hope you will. You just may not realize how meaningful or precious this little act of kindness may be to a person.

Congratulations to Bill and Linda Trosper, whose ranch has received an award from the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association at their mid-winter Conference as the The CCA Outstanding Seed Producer. The Trosper family is known for their functional, productive, quality of Angus cattle. This will be the 40th anniversary of their annual bull sale. Their ranch is southwest of Eads while traveling toward Galatea. Bill is a veteran who moved to Kiowa County many years ago from Texas. The Trosper family has been a real asset and blessing to Kiowa County and our school. Their son, Matt, and his wife are educators in Oklahoma. Their youngest son, Ryan, and has wife live in southern New Mexico, where Ryan is president of a college. Their middle son, Tim, and family live in Eads and work closely with his parents at the ranch.

Kiowa County has had some rain and snow in western parts of the county. We are grateful to get the moisture for or farmlands and pastures. People marvel to see rain in February, but we will gladly accept what the Lord sends us.

Friends and relatives gathered at the community building at the Kiowa County Fairgrounds February 3 for memorial services for Rick Morgan, who lived in the Prairie Queen community and graduated from Kit Carson High School. The community church groups brought foods for the noon lunch. Rick had lived in Eads for several years but moved to Missouri to be near his daughter, Amy, and her husband, Billy Gourley, and family and his son, Brad and Erin Morgan and family.

Sheriff Bryan Williams and his staff are glad to report that they now have a drone to use for the county’s safety. I am glad for this use of technology. My great nephew, Blake Stoker, has developed his skills in this technology in the United States Army, enough to travel to teach its use to other soldiers.

Robert Cloud celebrated his 50th birthday with friends who came to greet him at Prairie Pines Assisted Living Center February 3. He and his parents, Archie and Theresa, live north of Kit Carson.

Our sympathy is extended to Laura Negley and her family after the loss of her father, Albert Reigel, who died in Greeley after an extended illness.

Floyd and Phyllis Griswould have so enjoyed visitors who have come every day. Some friends have come long distances. Their nephew, Neal and wife, Carol Watts, drove to Eads from Fort Worth, Texas, to visit them as well as Virgyln Griswould and other relatives.

Elizebeth Puls recently retired from the United States Army. Readers may remember her as the youngest of four daughters of Pastor Steve and Lynn Puls, who served at the Eads Baptist Church.

Jim Bernard was happy to have his daughter, Cindy, and her husband, Danny George, come to the senior brunch with him in Eads. They have had such an interesting lifestyle. Since they retired from driving semi-trucks across the nation, they bought a big sailboat or ship where they leisurely sail in the warmer climate and enjoy the islands.

Our sympathy is extended to the family and spouse of Diane Davis of Haswell. She and her husband retired from working of a large ranch in Cheyenne County, and have been appreciated in the Haswell community for a number of years.

Many Eads Eagle fans had been looking forward to watching home basketball games February 9-10. Friday was Parent Night, when parents and their sons and daughters are introduced. Saturday night was to celebrate and remember the Girls State Basketball Championship team of 40 years ago.

Sarah Ivicic of Kit Cason has suffered the death of her mother, Alice Jean Fetty, last year and now her husband, Randall Neal Ivicic, died last week. They moved to Kit Cason to help her parents run the south side camper park.

Again, I encourage you to make or buy some Valentines to share.
