“When my anxieties multiply, your comforting calms me down” Psalm 91:19 (CEB)

The thought that goes with this scripture from God’s Word, is “God’s scripture has the power to overcome my anxieties.”

We have noticed on our “walk and roll” outings that many people have done extra mowing and weed cutting in August to prepare for the last county fair of the year in Colorado - Eads. The rain has added more blooms to the flowerpots and kegs along Maine Street, especially at Trista Tuttle’s Country Elegance Store, GN Bank, Kiowa County Press, Kelly’s Beauty Shoppe, Holly Mitchel’s offices, the Sand Creek offices, and museum. Even though Bud Bennett is gone, I am glad his family left his flags up for us to enjoy, and that Bev Lyon hasn’t stored them away.

The county fair days are just beginning as the newspapers go to print, so readers will have to wait to hear more about the exhibits, rodeos, parade, and other happenings. Many citizens have been laying plans for months to keep our traditions going.

The Chamber of Commerce leaders have been trying to find a time to catch Beth Bell and her husband, Chad, between meetings and games so we could announce that they have been selected to be our “Citizens of the Year.”

Bryce Cavenee of Tribune, Kansas, spoke to the senior citizen guests at the monthly brunch last week. Bryce is the grandson of the former Wanda Dunlap Davis of Eads-Haswell. He brought his wife, Mariah Cavenee, a hearing specialist, and her mobile trailer over to Eads. They come every first Thursday of the month parked by the clinic in Eads, and are available for testing and repairs related to hearing problems.

When we went Monday to the senior citizen’s coffee, we had such an interesting visit with a young man, maybe about 35 years old, Chaz Evanson, and his 14-year-old son, Troy, of Grand Junction. He plans to run for Colorado Governor in the general election to be held next year. He explained the process. Chaz planned to be here all week at the fair events.

Jan and Dan Richards spent the weekend in Buena Vista attending the wedding festivities of her grandson, Wyatt, to Sydney, an attractive young lady in that city. Best wishes to the young couple.

The Eads sports teams are competing very well in all their games and matches we see in news reports of our teams. We depend on Terry Voss to keep us posted on these facts. We read the newspapers also. Lucy Barnett was so happy when she heard the news that her granddaughter, Reese Barnett, had just hit her first ever “hole in one.” That was at the golf tournament in Thornton.

At a recent Eads volleyball game, they celebrated Bailey Sierra after she just made her 1,000th dig. LaDawne Britten, an Eads educator, had painted a big sign for her since her statistics indicated that it could happen.

Last year, Anthony Paez was an outstanding track runner for Eads, and a good soccer player for Lamar. This year, after his Eads football game at Miami-Yoder, the Paez family drove on to Sterling to stay and visit their daughter, Alessandra, who is a freshman at Northeastern Junior College. The next day they attended their daughter’s college volleyball game.

Joanna Beck of Sheridan Lake, who works at Weisbrod, was only gone a few days and here she came bringing her pretty little baby boy, who was born in a city hospital.

Another one of our caregivers here had a big baby boy too. We are happy for Kailee and Justin Lenox of Eads.

I was pleased to have Shane and Pam Lessenden visit me on their way home to Haswell from Lamar Sunday, where they had attended a reveal party hosted for her great niece and husband. Pam is the Lay Pastor at the Haswell Community Church. She does many caring things for others, her families, and the town.

Christina Wolf and Tyler Hill, who work in the clinic in Eads, are planning the October 4 Haswell Bazaar. It will be in the Haswell Community Center - the former school. The noon lunch is always a highlight of the day, with lots of ranchers and families coming into town to visit and look at the booths of goodies and gifts. A few ladies in the past have used their space as an indoor garage sale for downsizing. The time is usually about 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

It is good to hear of neighbors helping their neighbors. Recently, Terry and Teresa Echols and their three boys went to Sand Creek and cut down dead trees. The boys had lots of good equipment to cut and drag logs for stacking and hauling to the Evans home. Roger and Betsy Evans are so grateful because Roger has been in a lot of pain this year. He is scheduled for hip surgery at the end of the month at the Veterans hospital. They enjoyed lunch at the Evans home.

Congratulations to Adrienne (Simpkins) Yates, who was sworn in to be the Kiowa County Clerk recently after the untimely death of our dear friend, Delisa Eikenberg Weeks. I had heard that Delisa and the staff were very pleased with the skills that Adrienne brought to her job. I liked Adrienne very much as a student in high school.

We are blessed in Kiowa County.
