Cheyenne County heats up through the weekend with highs reaching 102 by Sunday
Cheyenne Wells opens a hot, mostly dry weekend Friday with sunny skies and a high near 94, and temperatures climb from there — near 98 Saturday and 102 Sunday — according to the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kansas.
Friday brings sunshine once any early morning clouds or patchy fog burn off by midday, with light west winds around 5 mph turning northeast in the afternoon. Friday night will be mostly clear, with a low around 64 and winds becoming calm in the evening.
"Several hot days are in store for the region starting Saturday," forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Friday's Area Forecast Discussion, noting that an upper-level ridge of high pressure anchored over the central and southern Plains will keep hot, midsummer conditions in place through the weekend. Forecast confidence in the heat is very high, the office said.
Heat advisory nearby, but Cheyenne County not included
A heat advisory is in effect from Saturday afternoon through Monday evening for much of northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska, where heat index values could top out in the mid-100s. Cheyenne County is not included in the advisory, but highs near 102 Sunday and 101 Monday will still pose a risk to anyone spending extended time outdoors.
Storm chances return early next week — 30 percent Monday night, 20 percent Tuesday afternoon and 50 percent Tuesday night. Goodland forecasters noted that with unusually high atmospheric moisture for late July and slow storm movement, heavy rain and locally minor flooding could occur under persistent storms, though severe weather is not anticipated at this time.
