Cheyenne Wells opens the stretch with a sunny, near-normal Wednesday before a strengthening upper ridge drives highs from the upper 80s into the mid and upper 90s Friday through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan.

Wednesday is sunny in Cheyenne Wells with a high near 87. North winds around 5 mph turn to the south during the afternoon. The thunderstorm chance holds off until after dark, with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday night, mainly between 10 p.m. and midnight, under a low around 61 and southwest winds around 5 mph.

Forecasters expect the atmosphere to remain marginally supportive of stronger storms through the end of the week. "Environmental parameters support at least a marginal risk of severe storms each day with damaging winds and large hail the main hazards," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Tuesday's Area Forecast Discussion, noting that "coverage may be somewhat limited by the relatively weak forcing."

Marginal storm risk, then a hot and dry ridge

A shortwave disturbance moving around the Four Corners ridge is expected to kick off convection in northeast Colorado Wednesday afternoon. Deep-layer wind shear near 45 knots would support supercells capable of large hail, damaging winds and perhaps a brief tornado, though forecasters said the best chances look to be south of Interstate 70 through the evening hours.

No watches, warnings or advisories are in effect for the Colorado portion of the Goodland forecast area, including Cheyenne County.

Fire weather is on forecasters' radar for the weekend but is not expected to reach warning criteria. Relative humidity may drop into the lower 20s and upper teens across east-central Colorado Saturday and Sunday, but wind gusts are not expected to exceed 25 mph outside Kit Carson and Yuma counties. "Confidence in a Red Flag Warning being needed is less than 5% both Saturday and Sunday," the discussion said. The greater concern is dry lightning from any storms that do develop over east-central Colorado.

Thursday and Friday

Thursday is sunny and warmer, with a high near 92 and south winds of 5 to 15 mph. The upper ridge continues to strengthen over the Great Basin, trimming deep-layer shear to around 35 knots and pushing the best storm chances east into Kansas and Nebraska. Thursday night is mostly clear with a low around 63.

Friday is sunny and hot, with a high near 95 and a mostly clear night settling near 63. Forecasters said any remaining afternoon and evening storm chances Friday will be confined to areas farther east.

Extended outlook

Saturday is sunny and hot, with a high near 97 and an overnight low around 65 under partly cloudy skies. "Southerly flow underneath the ridge alongside solar heating looks to favor hot conditions Saturday and Sunday," the long-term discussion said.

Sunday is mostly sunny and hot with a high near 96, followed by a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday night as a surface low moves through the High Plains. The low drops to around 63.

Rain totals through the weekend are expected to be light. Forecasters put the odds of more than a tenth of an inch at one in three or less across the forecast area both Saturday and Sunday, and any storms that form are not expected to turn severe.

With afternoon highs in the mid to upper 90s and humidity dropping into the teens and low 20s over the weekend, forecasters encourage residents to stay hydrated and to use caution with any activity that could throw sparks into dry grass.
