Cheyenne County sees the hottest day of the week Friday, with sunny skies and a high near 97 at Cheyenne Wells, and forecasters say isolated severe storms are possible late in the day before slightly cooler weather settles in for the weekend.

Friday is sunny and hot, with south winds of 5 to 10 mph. Skies turn partly cloudy overnight with a low around 62 and a southeast wind of 5 to 10 mph.

"Heat peaks today, then slightly cooler over the weekend," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Friday's Area Forecast Discussion, which also flagged the possibility of isolated severe weather late Friday afternoon into the night.

Low confidence in Friday storm development

Forecasters described very low confidence in whether storms will develop and how widespread they might be. Environmental conditions remain capable of supporting large hail and damaging winds, but in a weak forcing pattern much depends on whether storms form upstream and drift into the area during the evening.

High-resolution guidance suggests scattered afternoon convection is possible over the Palmer Divide in eastern Colorado, where localized wind gusts up to 65 mph could accompany any storm. Overall, the Goodland office said Friday's severe weather potential appears lower than Thursday's.

Weekend rain chances arrive mainly at night as showers and storms move out of Colorado, with a low severe threat. No watches, warnings or advisories were in effect for the Colorado portion of the Goodland forecast area Friday morning, and no Red Flag Warning covers Cheyenne County.

Saturday and Sunday

Saturday is sunny at Cheyenne Wells with a high near 91 and southeast winds of 5 to 15 mph. A chance of showers and thunderstorms arrives Saturday night, with a 40 percent chance of precipitation, mostly cloudy skies, an east wind of 10 to 15 mph and a low around 63.

Sunday turns mostly sunny with a high near 92 and southeast winds of 5 to 15 mph becoming south in the afternoon. Forecasters said storms rolling off the mountains and Front Range could reach the area Sunday night, carrying a limited wind and hail threat mainly on the Colorado side, before weakening overnight. The low falls to about 64.

Extended outlook

Monday is sunny with a high near 96. A chance of showers and thunderstorms follows before midnight, then a slight chance of showers, with a 40 percent chance of precipitation and a low around 63.

Tuesday is mostly sunny with a high near 91. Forecasters said Tuesday currently looks to have somewhat better instability and wind shear than Monday, and some guidance points to the potential for heavy rainfall. Showers become likely Tuesday night, with a 60 percent chance of precipitation and a low near 60.

Safety

Anyone with outdoor plans Friday afternoon and evening should keep an eye on the sky and have a way to receive warnings, since storms in this pattern can develop quickly and produce large hail and damaging winds with little notice.
