Sunny skies and a gradual warm-up are in the forecast for Cheyenne County through the middle of next week, with highs in Cheyenne Wells expected to reach the low 80s Saturday, dip back into the upper 60s Sunday, then climb into the mid-80s by Monday. National Weather Service forecasters in Goodland, Kan., expect dry conditions to persist through the period.

Friday is shaping up as a comfortable spring day in Cheyenne Wells, with a few high clouds, afternoon temperatures near 70 degrees and a north wind 10 to 15 mph occasionally gusting above 20 mph. Skies turn mostly clear overnight, with lows around 42 degrees and winds becoming southerly after midnight.

Meteorologists in the Goodland forecast office, which covers Cheyenne County, noted in the latest Area Forecast Discussion that the broader pattern features a deep upper-level trough across the central Rockies giving way to milder conditions, with mid-May highs forecast in the 60s to 70s before warming further by Monday and Tuesday.

Warmer Saturday, then a brief Sunday cool-down

Winds begin out of the southwest at 10 to 15 mph before turning to the north in the afternoon as a weak cold front pushes through the area. Saturday night turns mostly cloudy, with a low near 41 degrees and a north wind 10 to 15 mph.

Sunday cools off behind the front

Sunday will be noticeably cooler in Cheyenne County in the wake of the front, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 68 degrees. Winds are expected to be light and northerly during the morning, shifting to the east by afternoon. Skies clear Sunday night with a low near 40 degrees.

Extended outlook: 80s return Monday and Tuesday

The warm-up resumes Monday, with sunny skies and a high near 85 degrees in Cheyenne Wells. Tuesday continues sunny with a high near 82 and light winds. Overnight lows climb into the upper 40s, well above seasonal averages for mid-May.

As of Friday morning, no Red Flag Warnings were in effect from the Goodland forecast office for Cheyenne County or the surrounding Tri-State area. Even so, residents and producers are reminded that low afternoon humidity values and the open terrain east of the Colorado-Kansas border can allow grass fires to spread quickly when winds pick up.
