Cold front, rain and wet snow target Cheyenne County midweek
Cheyenne Wells residents can expect a sharp turn from spring-like warmth to a wintry pattern this week, as a cold front Monday evening ushers in cooler, wetter conditions through Wednesday before sunshine and 70-degree afternoons return Thursday and Friday.
Monday brings a mild, partly sunny day in Cheyenne Wells, with a high near 80 and west winds of 5 to 15 mph turning northerly in the afternoon ahead of an approaching cold front. A 20 percent chance of showers is in the forecast after 4 p.m. Northeast winds are expected to gust to about 35 mph behind the front, and overnight lows are forecast in the upper 30s under increasing clouds.
Forecasters in the Goodland, Kan., office, which covers Cheyenne County, wrote in Monday’s Area Forecast Discussion that “rain may mix with, or transition to, wet snow in eastern CO and adjacent KS border counties Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Accumulating wet snow is possible.”
Wet, cool stretch arrives Tuesday
Tuesday is expected to be the coolest and wettest day of the week, with patchy morning fog, rain developing through the day and breezy east winds of 15 to 20 mph. The high is forecast to reach only about 47 degrees in Cheyenne Wells, with an 80 percent chance of precipitation. Temperatures will fall steadily Tuesday evening, and forecasters expect rain to mix with and then transition to wet snow late Tuesday night, with a low near 28 degrees.
Wednesday remains cold and damp, with rain possibly mixed with snow continuing through much of the day. Cheyenne Wells is forecast to top out near 39 degrees with a 100 percent chance of precipitation. Skies clear Wednesday night, with light winds and a low around 24 degrees, raising the prospect of a hard freeze. Forecasters note that Climate Prediction Center guidance has placed the area at moderate odds for a Freeze Watch heading into Thursday morning, and gardeners with sensitive plants should plan to cover or move them.

Fire weather concerns remain limited
No fire weather watches or warnings were in effect for Cheyenne County as of Monday morning. The Goodland office reported no significant fire weather concerns through the upcoming frontal passage, citing a rapid rise in relative humidity behind the front and incoming widespread rainfall. Critical fire weather conditions during the early-week period have been concentrated farther south along the New Mexico border, in zones outside Cheyenne County.
Tuesday and Wednesday at a glance
Tuesday and Wednesday will feel more like late March than early May in Cheyenne Wells. Daytime highs will run roughly 30 to 40 degrees below Monday’s, with periods of rain Tuesday and a rain-and-snow mix Wednesday. Travel along U.S. 40 and Colorado 385 could be slick at times, especially Tuesday night and Wednesday morning when freezing temperatures combine with active precipitation.
Extended outlook: Sunny and warming late week
Drier and notably warmer weather is expected to take hold across the eastern plains by Thursday. Cheyenne Wells is forecast to be sunny with a high near 68 on Thursday and near 72 on Friday, under broad northwesterly flow aloft. Climate Prediction Center extended outlooks for the May 10–14 and May 12–18 periods favor above-normal temperatures across southeastern Colorado, with near-normal precipitation chances as a series of weak shortwave disturbances pass through the region.
