Death investigation underway following discovery of remains near Cañon City

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation has launched a death investigation after hikers discovered human remains near Skyline Drive in Cañon City on July 19, 2026.

The remains have been positively identified as Shawn Michael Dixon Sr., born September 22, 1978. Dixon Sr. was last seen and heard from on September 12, 2023, at approximately 7:00 p.m. as he was getting out of a taxi near Rudd Park. He was expected to meet family later that evening at "Triangle Park," near the intersection of Hazel Avenue and College Avenue in Cañon City, but did not arrive.

The CBI is leading the active death investigation in coordination with the Cañon City Police Department. Autopsy results are pending.

Law enforcement is asking the public for assistance. Anyone with information is encouraged to submit an anonymous tip to Fremont County CrimeStoppers by calling 719-275-7867. Anonymous tips that lead to an arrest may be eligible for a cash reward.

Charges are merely accusations; all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
