Cheyenne Wells and Cheyenne County can count on a dry, sunny start to the week, with highs holding near 89 Monday through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan.

Monday will be sunny with a high near 89 and a breezy south wind of 10 to 20 mph gusting to 30 mph. Monday night turns clear with a low around 61 as the breezy south wind continues.

"Dry conditions, breezy winds and near average temperatures expected through at least the start of the new work week," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion, adding that the "signal for a prolonged period of hot and dry conditions continues."

Steady ridge keeps rain away

An upper-level ridge remains in control of the region's weather, and Goodland forecasters said no precipitation is expected through midweek. A surface high over Missouri will keep southeast winds flowing, breezy at times, while holding dew points in the 50s and 60s.

That moisture works in the county's favor: forecasters said afternoon humidity should stay well above levels that would raise fire weather concerns. No watches, warnings or advisories were in effect for Cheyenne County as of Sunday night.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday will be sunny with a high near 89 and a lighter southeast wind of 10 to 15 mph. Tuesday night will be mostly clear with a low around 60.

Wednesday continues sunny with a high near 89 and lighter winds, followed by a mostly clear Wednesday night with a low around 61.

Extended outlook

Thursday will be sunny and breezy with a high near 91, and Friday warms further to a sunny 93. Overnight lows hold in the low 60s. Goodland forecasters said an upper-level high sitting over much of the country will keep the pattern hot and potentially humid, though a cold front could touch off storms Friday or Saturday evening.

Climate Prediction Center outlooks issued Sunday favor above-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation for Colorado July 18-22 as monsoonal moisture spreads into the region.

With continued warm, dry days ahead, residents should stay hydrated during afternoon hours and keep an eye on later forecasts for possible weekend storms.
