Flash flood risk grows in Cheyenne County as heavy rain nears
Cheyenne Wells will start the week breezy and dry, but forecasters say heavy rain and a slight risk of flash flooding will develop by Tuesday and continue into Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Monday will be mostly cloudy with a high near 74 degrees, and breezy south winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts as high as 35 mph. A 40% chance of showers arrives after 2 a.m. Monday night, when the low is expected to fall to around 59 degrees amid continued breezy conditions.
“Heavy rain is expected by Tuesday afternoon, especially along and south of Interstate 70 and along and east of U.S. 83, where 1.5 to 2.0 inches, or more, are expected by Wednesday morning,” a meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Sunday’s Area Forecast Discussion.
Slight risk of flash flooding Tuesday
Forecasters placed the Tri-State region, including Cheyenne County, under a slight risk — level 2 of 4 — for isolated flash flooding Tuesday and Tuesday night as deep moisture streams northeast ahead of a surface low and cold front. Rain chances climb to as much as 60% to 90% by Tuesday afternoon, and the Goodland forecast office said no watches or warnings were in effect for Colorado as of Sunday evening, though that could change as the heavier rain approaches.

Forecasters expect widespread rainfall totals of 1.5 to 2 inches or more along and east of U.S. 83 by Wednesday morning.

A 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before noon, is forecast for Thursday, with skies clearing to mostly sunny and a high near 62 degrees. A jet streak overhead is expected to keep afternoons windy through the day, forecasters said. Friday turns dry and sunny with a high near 64 degrees as drier air moves in behind the system.
Forecasters advise Cheyenne County residents to stay alert for flash flooding Tuesday and Wednesday, particularly in low-lying areas and near normally dry drainages, and to never drive through flooded roads.
