Cheyenne County starts Friday cold and breezy, with a Freeze Warning in effect until 9 a.m. and a Freeze Watch for early Saturday, before temperatures climb into the 60s and 70s over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan.

Friday brings sunshine and a high near 52 degrees. North winds of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph, are expected early and should ease to 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Friday night is clear with a low around 28 and light, variable winds that become southwest at 5 to 10 mph after midnight.

The National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Friday’s Area Forecast Discussion that a light freeze is likely across its entire area Saturday morning, with a hard freeze possible, at about a 40 percent probability, in northeast Colorado and areas west of Highway 27 in Kansas and Nebraska.

Freeze watch and fire weather

A Freeze Watch covers Cheyenne County from late tonight through Saturday morning.

No Red Flag Warning is in effect for Cheyenne County. However, the Goodland office’s discussion said critical fire weather conditions “will be possible in northeast Colorado” Saturday afternoon, as temperatures warm into the mid-70s, relative humidity drops into the teens and south winds gust up to 35 mph. Elevated fire conditions, rather than critical ones, are more likely Sunday afternoon as winds ease. The discussion did not specify how far those conditions would extend into Cheyenne County.

Goodland forecasters said winds Monday should be light, from the north at 5 to 15 mph, and Tuesday and Wednesday winds should be from the south at 10 to 20 mph, gusting to about 25 mph.

The discussion noted relative humidity of 20 to 25 percent Monday through Wednesday for portions of eastern Colorado, and the point forecast shows highs near 79 on Wednesday. Residents should avoid outdoor burning and take care with equipment that can throw sparks on gusty afternoons, and protect tender plants and pets from Friday night’s cold.
