Lamar and Prowers County face a warm, breezy and unsettled week, with temperatures climbing toward the mid 90s by Tuesday even as daily chances for showers and thunderstorms work through the area. Forecasters expect the warmest day Tuesday before a wetter, slightly cooler stretch arrives midweek.

Monday turns partly sunny and then sunny, with a high near 89 and a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 p.m. Winds will be breezy, shifting from the north at 5 to 10 mph to the southeast at 15 to 20 mph during the morning, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Monday night carries a 30 percent chance of storms before 2 a.m., with a low around 58 and continued breezy, gusty southeast winds.

"Weather looks to be quite active this upcoming week as a favorable pattern for severe storms develops over the region," Stephen Hodanish, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo, wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion. He noted the severe weather threat across the region was likely to last into Thursday before upper-level winds weaken and the threat for organized storms decreases by Friday.

Warmest day Tuesday, then heavier rain

Tuesday stands out as the week's hottest day, with abundant sunshine pushing the high to around 94 under breezy east winds gusting to 30 mph. No Red Flag Warning is in effect for Prowers County — a Monday afternoon warning to the west covers only the interior mountains and valleys — but the combination of heat and gusty winds bears watching. The pattern then turns wetter: Tuesday night brings an 80 percent chance of showers and storms, with a quarter to half an inch of rain possible.

Tuesday and Wednesday

After Tuesday's heat, Tuesday night turns wet, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms giving way to showers after midnight and an 80 percent chance of rain. Forecasters expect a quarter to half an inch of new rainfall, with locally higher amounts in storms.

Wednesday cools to a high near 84 under a partly sunny sky, with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms possible after 9 a.m. Showers become likely again Wednesday night, with a 60 percent chance of rain and a low around 60.

Extended outlook: Thursday and Friday

The active pattern continues Thursday, which carries a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after noon, with a partly sunny sky, a high near 87 and breezy east-southeast winds gusting to 30 mph. Rain chances stay at 50 percent Thursday night before midnight.

Friday turns mostly sunny and hot again, with a high near 96 as the storm threat winds down. Forecasters say heat continues to build heading into the weekend, with readings climbing into the triple digits by Saturday across the Lamar area.

With heat building and storms in the forecast, residents are reminded to stay hydrated, limit afternoon exposure during the hottest hours, and watch for gusty winds and lightning when storms move through.
