Eads opens the week on a mild note Monday before temperatures climb sharply, starting near 80 and topping out around 101 by Wednesday as building heat and gusty, dry winds raise the fire danger across Kiowa County.

Monday will be mostly cloudy at first, then gradually become sunny, with a high near 80, according to the National Weather Service. East-southeast winds of 5 to 10 mph will become southerly through the morning. Skies turn mostly clear Monday night, with a low around 53.

The main concerns will be increasing fire weather conditions through much of the extended period, and very hot temperatures for Wednesday, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion.

Midweek heat, rising fire danger

The week's main weather story is a surge of heat and increasingly critical fire conditions. After highs near 80 Monday and around 90 Tuesday, temperatures are forecast to peak near 101 in Eads on Wednesday.

The Pueblo forecast office expects gusty winds and very dry air to spread east across the region Tuesday into Wednesday, reaching the Interstate 25 corridor and the eastern plains, with widespread high fire danger. Forecasters advised that those with outdoor burning activities should plan to burn another day. No formal fire weather warnings were in effect for Kiowa County as of Sunday, but conditions warrant caution.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday will be sunny and warmer, with a high near 90 and light winds becoming south-southwest in the afternoon. The low Tuesday night will be around 59. Wednesday brings the week's hottest weather, sunny and hot with a high near 101. West-northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph will turn north in the afternoon. Wednesday night turns breezy, with north-northeast winds of 15 to 20 mph increasing to 20 to 25 mph after midnight and gusts as high as 40 mph.

Extended outlook

A cold front is expected to drop south across the plains late Wednesday into Thursday, easing the heat. Thursday will be sunny with a high near 84 and north-northeast winds around 15 mph. Friday, the Juneteenth holiday, turns hot and breezy again, with a high near 90 and south winds of 15 to 25 mph gusting to 35 mph. Forecasters said southwesterly flow late in the week will bring increasing chances for afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms into the weekend.

With triple-digit heat possible midweek, residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors during the afternoon and check on vulnerable neighbors. Gusty winds and very dry air also raise the risk of rapid fire spread, and outdoor burning should be postponed.
