Lamar to hit 104 Wednesday as overnight storms eye Prowers County
Lamar faces the hottest day of the week Wednesday, with sunshine driving the high to near 104 degrees ahead of a 50 percent chance of evening thunderstorms, followed by a hot Thursday near 101 and a sunny Friday near 98.
Wednesday will be sunny and hot with a high near 104. Breezy east-southeast winds of 15 to 25 mph will become southerly in the afternoon, with gusts as high as 35 mph and a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 p.m. Wednesday night, the chance of storms rises to 50 percent, mainly before midnight, with a low around 69 and rainfall amounts between a tenth and a quarter of an inch possible — higher in thunderstorms.
"It will continue to be hot across the plains tomorrow and 100s are likely once again from Pueblo east to the KS border," Stephen Hodanish, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo, wrote in Tuesday's Area Forecast Discussion.
Heat, wind keep fire danger elevated
No fire weather warnings were in effect for Prowers County Tuesday, but the combination of triple-digit heat, wind gusts to 35 mph and deepening drought across southeast Colorado will keep fire danger elevated through midweek. The best chance of meaningful rain comes Thursday night, when showers are likely before midnight with a 70 percent chance of precipitation.
