Lamar’s warm Saturday gives way to cool Sunday before 90s return
Lamar and the rest of Prowers County are looking at a warm, sunny Saturday with highs in the mid-80s, a noticeably cooler Sunday in the low 70s, and a quick climb into the upper 80s and low 90s by Monday and Tuesday — the warmest stretch of the early-May period so far.
Saturday brings full sunshine and a high near 86. Southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph turn to the northwest behind a passing cold front in the afternoon, and Saturday night becomes cloudy with a low near 42 and north-northeast winds of 10 to 15 mph.
Eric Petersen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Pueblo, noted in this week's Area Forecast Discussion that the upper-level pattern continues to favor dry, warm days across southeast Colorado, with brief reinforcing cool shots between extended stretches of above-normal temperatures.
Sunday cooldown, then heat returns
Sunday is the coolest day of the period in Lamar — mostly sunny, a high near 72, and light north winds turning easterly by afternoon. Sunday night clears out, with a low near 40 and a light southerly breeze before sunrise.

Extended outlook: into the 90s by midweek
The warmup arrives quickly. Monday is sunny with a high near 90 and south-southwest winds of 5 to 15 mph. Tuesday holds the heat at a high near 90 under sunshine, with northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph turning northeast by afternoon. Wednesday climbs further, with a sunny high near 92 and an east-southeast wind increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon, with gusts that could reach 35 mph.
Overnight lows climb to near 47 Monday night, the mid-40s Tuesday night and the low 50s by Wednesday night.
Fire weather
No Red Flag Warnings are in effect for Prowers County (Zone COZ236) or the surrounding eastern plains as of Saturday morning. While afternoon humidity values across the Lamar area will fall well below 25 percent through the period, sustained winds remain shy of critical thresholds, and the Pueblo office has not advertised fire weather highlights. With near-90-degree heat and continued dry conditions through Wednesday, however — and gusty afternoon winds Wednesday in particular — residents are encouraged to use caution with outdoor burning, equipment that throws sparks, and properly extinguished cigarettes.
