Large multi-vehicle crash near Eisenhower Tunnel sends 19 to hospital, closes Interstate 70
A large multi-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate 70 near the Eisenhower Tunnel injured 19 people and prompted an extended closure of the highway Tuesday afternoon, the Colorado State Patrol said.
Major incidents on Colorado highways have kept troopers busy in recent months. In February, the Colorado State Patrol investigated seven fatal crashes in a single weekend, underscoring the scale of the agency’s workload along interstate corridors.

The Colorado State Patrol first received the report at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, with the crash occurring near milepost 216 on eastbound Interstate 70 at the Eisenhower Tunnel. Nineteen people were transported from the scene with varying injuries, and no fatalities had been reported as of the initial update. The number of vehicles involved had not yet been confirmed.
The westbound left lane of Interstate 70 was closed for medical staging, while the westbound right lane remained open and moving slowly. All lanes of eastbound Interstate 70 were estimated to be closed for the next four to six hours.
