15 Years Ago - June 25, 2010

  • The 2010 edition of the Eads Chamber of Commerce Community Marketplace will resume July 3.
  • USDA Update- Rod Johnson: Wheat harvest is beginning the west end of the county.
  • Time is running out for brand owners to pay a fee to keep the rights to a brand. Those who have not already paid the 2007 brand assessment need to submit their assessment and late fees by June 30, 2010, or their brand will be cancelled.

25 Years Ago - June 30, 2000

  • County wide fire ban enacted by the Kiowa County Commissioners earlier this month has been extended to prohibit unsupervised fireworks.
  • USDA Update- Rod Johnson: The FSA Office is still trying to get approval to graze CRP due to the drought.
  • Dustin Wyckoff will be traveling to Springfield, Illinois, to compete at the 52nd Annual National High School Finals Rodeo, the world’s largest rodeo.

40 Years Ago - June 28, 1985

  • Rick Arth was probing the mysterious black hole that appeared in his back yard. The mystery solved by Byron (Wendy) McDaniel, who said he remembers he and several others dug the hole for “Doc” Mitchell back in 1932 for a cesspool. Rick said it took almost two truckloads of dirt to fill the hole.

50 Years Ago - June 27, 1975

  • Fourth of July events include bicycle races, running, and sack races. New events sponsored by the Round-up 4-H club is the frog jumping contest and turtle race. Prairie Queen 4-H clubs scheduled a pie eating contest. Free swimming at the Eads pool, and doubleheader baseball game is scheduled.
