• New at the 2001 Kiowa County Fair is the second delicious barbecue. A Saturday barbecue featuring pork has been added.

• The cover picture contest for the upcoming Kiowa County History Book has been extended to July 1, 1987.
• The Towner Methodist Church Fun Day was held at Hasty Lake.
• Manley Axtell has been giving other residents of the Weisbrod Nursing Home rides on his 3-wheeler bicycle

50 Years Ago - August 27, 1976

• George Howard of Pueblo recently took over management of the Rialto Hotel with plans to make the Rialto as “homey” as he can.
• Joan Crow, Cecil Blekeberg, Gorge Engel annd Allen Derby of Kit Carson arrived with fiddles, banjo, and guitar to entertain the Weisbrod Nursing Home.
• The Plainview Hawks will be playing football this year without a single player that had played the year before.

• A policy suggested by the state Commissioner of Education that all schools open on regular schedule and remain open regardless of the incidence of polio in the state or individual communities.

100 Years Ago - August 27, 1926

• Electric lighting is important on the farm. Not only is it more convenient than the open-flame method of lighting but being much safer, and eliminating the possibility of fire.
• Brakeman Brown was held up on the UP train until it reached Kit Carson where the fellow alighted and hit south for Eads. Officers at Eads had already taken the pair into custody on suspicion as they tried to send a gun by parcel post before receiving the message.
