Thunderstorms are possible across western Kiowa County on Friday afternoon and evening before hot, dry and breezy weather settles in for the weekend, with high temperatures near Eads climbing from the mid-80s on Friday to around 100 degrees by Sunday. The National Weather Service in Pueblo says a few of Friday's storms could turn strong to severe over the plains.

Friday brings mostly sunny skies near Eads with a high near 86 and a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 5 p.m. South-southeast winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph in the afternoon. The chance of storms rises to 40 percent into the evening before tapering after 10 p.m., with an overnight low around 58.

“Across the plains, as storms push east and tap into the richer moisture still in place across the plains, and given shear around 40 knots, isolated strong to severe storms will be possible,” a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Friday's Area Forecast Discussion. The forecaster said the strongest storms could produce large hail up to 1.5 inches and wind gusts to 65 mph.

Heat and fire weather build for the weekend

Once Friday's storms move out, the weekend turns hot and dry. The Pueblo office said critical fire weather conditions return this weekend and into next week, especially for areas west of the Interstate 25 corridor. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect Saturday for the mountains and zones to the west, but it does not include the eastern plains around Eads. Even so, with highs near 100 and breezy southwest winds, fire danger will be elevated across Kiowa County, and residents should use caution with anything that could spark a grass fire.

Saturday and Sunday

Saturday will be sunny and breezy near Eads with a high near 96 as southwest winds gust to 30 mph. Saturday night stays mostly clear with a low around 64. Sunday turns hot, with sunny skies, a high near 100 and breezy southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph. The overnight low Sunday will be near 64.

Extended outlook

The hot, breezy pattern holds into next week. Monday will be sunny with a high near 98 and southwest gusts to 35 mph, dropping to a low near 61. Tuesday stays sunny with a high near 95 as winds shift to the north before turning back to the south-southeast in the afternoon.

With temperatures near 100 degrees through the weekend, forecasters urge residents to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors during the heat of the day and check on neighbors and livestock. Dry, breezy conditions also mean any fire that starts could spread quickly.
