Summer-like warmth precedes stormy weekend in Prowers County
Lamar and Prowers County will see temperatures push into the low 80s Wednesday and Thursday before a storm system brings widespread shower and thunderstorm chances from late Thursday through Saturday, accompanied by gusty winds, according to the National Weather Service.
Wednesday will be sunny and warm with highs near 83 and light westerly winds. Clear skies will continue Wednesday night as temperatures fall to 41. Thursday brings a repeat performance, with highs again reaching 83 before a chance of showers and thunderstorms develops during the afternoon hours as moisture surges northward ahead of a cold front.
Stephen Hodanish, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Pueblo forecast office, noted that the best chance for stronger storms will come Saturday as a Pacific trough approaches the region. Thursday’s cold front will set the stage for an increasingly active pattern through the weekend.
Friday through Saturday: storms and strong winds
Friday will mark the transition to a stormier pattern, with partly sunny skies and a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs will pull back to 71 as north-northeast winds around 15 mph usher in cooler air. The storm threat intensifies Friday night, with showers and thunderstorms likely and a 60 percent chance of precipitation.
Saturday is expected to be the most active day, with showers and thunderstorms likely throughout the day. Highs will reach 75, but south winds of 15 to 30 mph with gusts as high as 45 mph will make conditions feel unsettled. A 70 percent chance of precipitation makes Saturday the wettest day in the forecast.

Sunday brings sunshine and wind
Clearing conditions are expected Sunday, with sunny skies and highs rebounding to 81. However, strong southwest winds of 25 to 30 mph with gusts reaching 45 mph will accompany the warmth. Forecasters at the Pueblo office have noted that Sunday and Monday are likely to bring critical fire weather conditions across the southeastern Colorado plains due to the combination of high winds, warm temperatures and very low humidity.
While no Red Flag Warning is currently in effect for Prowers County, the elevated wind speeds and low humidity expected Sunday warrant caution. Residents should avoid outdoor burning and remain vigilant about fire risk.
Extended outlook
The breezy pattern will continue into Monday with highs in the upper 70s. A weather system arriving Tuesday is expected to bring cooler temperatures in the mid-60s along with a renewed chance of rain showers.
The Pueblo forecast office’s most recent Red Flag Warning, which covered Baca County, expired Monday evening. While Prowers County was not included in that warning, the gusty winds and warm temperatures forecast for Sunday call for heightened awareness of fire conditions.
