Lamar and Prowers County face a hot and dry week, with sunny skies, triple-digit afternoon highs and gusty winds expected Monday through Wednesday. The National Weather Service in Pueblo calls for high fire danger to persist across the region throughout the work week as temperatures climb.

Monday will be sunny and hot, with a high near 102. Breezy west-southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph are expected, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Skies turn mostly clear Monday night as the low drops to around 64, with patchy smoke possible late.

"Hot, dry and windy conditions will prevail through Friday across southern Colorado with continued high fire danger," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion. Forecasters noted that areas east of Interstate 25 that received recent heavy rainfall are not under formal fire weather highlights, but cautioned that residents planning outdoor burning should use extreme caution.

Dangerous heat and fire danger

No Red Flag Warning is in effect for Prowers County, with the Pueblo office's active warnings focused on the southern mountains and the Interstate 25 corridor. Still, with afternoon highs reaching the century mark and beyond, low humidity and gusty winds, fire conditions across the lower Arkansas Valley remain elevated to critical at times. A Fire Weather Watch covers much of southern Colorado for Tuesday, though the far eastern counties are excluded. Residents should avoid any activity that could ignite dry grass during the heat of the day.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday will be sunny with a high near 98 and a slight, 10 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. West-southwest winds become south-southeast at 20 to 25 mph in the afternoon. Tuesday night turns windy, with a low around 66 and gusts as high as 45 mph. Wednesday brings more sun and a high near 100, with breezy southwest winds increasing to 20 to 25 mph in the afternoon and gusts to 35 mph.

Extended outlook: Thursday and Friday

The heat peaks late in the week. Thursday will be sunny and hot with a high near 103, followed by a sweltering Friday high near 107. Breezy to windy south winds continue, with overnight gusts of 40 to 45 mph possible. Pueblo forecasters say dangerous fire weather conditions are expected across southern Colorado on both days due to gusty winds and very low humidity, with a possible pattern change bringing relief by next weekend.

With dangerous heat building through the week, residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors during the hottest part of the afternoon, never leave children or pets in parked vehicles and check on elderly neighbors and those without air conditioning.
