A 23-year-old University of Colorado football player was killed early March 1 in a single-vehicle crash on Baseline Road in Boulder County, authorities said.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m. near Newland Court when a 2023 Tesla Model 3 traveling westbound lost control on a right-hand curve, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Investigators said the Tesla crossed into the eastbound lane and struck a guardrail, continued through the guardrail, then hit an electrical line pole before rolling down an embankment. The vehicle landed on its wheels and caught fire.

The driver, identified as Dominiq A. Ponder, was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said he was a member of the University of Colorado Buffaloes football team.

The Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit is leading the investigation. Preliminary findings indicate speed is suspected as a factor in the crash.
